A number of news reports and videos circulating online indicate that the strike targeted the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) refinery on Sunday and destroyed parts of the facility in a blazing fireball. Dramatic images of huge flames and thick black smoke billowing out of the area as well as the refinery’s smoke appear to include some video, raising some speculation that the Bapco refinery is not the only target.

Iran’s state media outlet Press TV posted pictures on social media platform X that appeared to show a missile or drone hitting the already burning facility. Other footage, including clips from RT, showed the refinery erupting in intense flames after what was described as a direct hit on oil storage facilities.

The Bahrain News Agency said emergency teams were able to contain the fire, the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company said. Firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze and damage assessments are still being done. There are also reports of at least two units at the refinery being hit in the process, which could be very serious damage to the state-run energy hub.

The attack comes against the backdrop of rising tensions in the region. Iran has warned Gulf countries repeatedly not to support the United States or Israel and not to allow their territory or airspace to be used for military purposes. Bahrain, which hosts U.S. military bases, is seen as a strategic target in Tehran’s wider regional response.

In a parallel action, the Israeli Defense Forces announced that it carried out at least 120 strikes on targets inside Iran in the past 24 hours. Iran’s air defense systems and drone and missile facilities in the air and missile launch pads were targeted.

The latest developments come alongside Iran’s reported downing of two US warplanes, adding to a combustible situation. The conflict now running into its sixth week began after joint US and Israeli strikes on February 28 and has since spiraled into a wider regional conflict.

The war has had deep-seated repercussions for many: mass casualties, disrupted shipping routes, and fuel prices have gone up sharply. Stock markets have been skittish because of instability and there are signs of how long-term the effects might be on oil supplies as the international market will be affected.

There is little sign of de-escalation, however, as both sides continue to engage in strikes. Bahrain’s refinery attack also shows the extent of the conflict and the threat of other countries and critical infrastructure being hit in the coming days.
