Iranian missile strikes on a US military base in Jordan have reportedly damaged multiple American aircraft, in another escalation in the rapidly intensifying confrontation between Tehran and Washington.
The strikes targeted the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, an important base for U.S. military operations in the region. Six US F-15 fighter jets suffered a small amount of damage, but were back in service, sources said.
The more serious incident included an A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the “Warthog,” which was attacked by another aircraft and suffered severe damage to one of its wings, with reports that the wing was lost. Air & Space Forces Magazine also confirmed that one A-10 had severe damage to its wings and that about eight F-15E Strike Eagles were slightly damaged but were still operational.
The attack took place amid a growing strain between the US and Iran. The latest exchange came after a United States military strike on Iranian oil tankers, and Iran sent ballistic missile attacks on American and allied targets in the region. Jordanian officials claimed that most of the missiles directed at the country were intercepted.

Although American military equipment was damaged, no American casualties were reported in connection with the Jordanian base attack. But such a dangerous scenario for American forces stationed across the Middle East as the conflict extends beyond Iranian territory.
Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, located near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan, has been an important location for the U.S. Air Force in the region and is one of the major hubs in the region when the region is most at war. Jordan's close military alliance with Washington has made it more vulnerable for the kingdom and for US forces there to Iranian missile and drone threats.
Damage to the F-15s was particularly striking because these aircraft are the most air-superiority and strike aircraft in the US Air Force. That the affected aircraft were returned to service suggests the damage was not catastrophic. The A-10, however, may have suffered far more serious damage.
The attack also underscores the importance of missile defence systems protecting U.S. installations in the region. During the attack, American forces used Patriot missile interceptors, and Jordanian forces also worked to intercept incoming missiles.
The attack came as Washington and Tehran are in a vicious military rivalry. Each strike increases the threat that attacks on military bases, naval assets, and regional infrastructure will only escalate.
For the United States, the damage at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base is a direct cost to its military presence in the region, though no American casualties were reported in this incident. Iran could demonstrate the ability to damage US aircraft at a large foreign facility, and show American bases are still vulnerable despite extensive air-defence efforts.
The situation is fluid and further assessment of the damage could alter the extent of aircraft damage reported. For now, the incident underscores how quickly the US-Iran conflict is becoming a wider regional military conflict.
