Kuwait Intercepts Hostile Missiles and Drones Amid Rising Gulf Tensions; Air Raid Sirens Sound Across Country

Kuwait’s air defence systems successfully intercepted what authorities described as hostile missile and drone attacks on Wednesday, and air raid sirens sounded in parts of the country to signal the start of the attack. The incident is the latest escalation in an already-bad security situation in the Gulf.

The Kuwaiti Army's General Staff confirmed that the country's air defence units had engaged and intercepted incoming aerial threats. Residents were told that any explosions heard during the operation were likely caused by the interception of the missiles and drones before they could reach their intended targets.

The attack comes just days after a separate missile attack by U.S. military troops who are stationed in Kuwait. Iran launched two ballistic missiles on U.S. bases in Kuwait late Sunday night, Central Command (CENTCOM) said. They were intercepted, and no American personnel were hurt or killed.

CENTCOM reported that US forces are on high alert as the region becomes more unstable.

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry immediately condemned the missile attack and said it is a dangerous escalation and threat to regional security and stability. Kuwait will take whatever measures necessary to hold Iran accountable for the serious acts of aggression, the ministry said.

The recent missile launches followed a series of military exchanges between the United States and Iran. CENTCOM said American forces had conducted what it described as self-defence strikes on Iranian military assets over the weekend. The operation allegedly targeted radar and drone command-and-control facilities after incidents that included the alleged downing of a US MQ-1 drone over international waters.

According to the US military, fighter aircraft subsequently destroyed Iranian air defence systems, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones, which they found to be dangerous to maritime traffic in regional waters.

Despite the intensified confrontations, CENTCOM said that no American troops were harmed in the operations. But Kuwait’s missile and drone interceptions highlight the increasing dangers for Gulf countries as tension between Iran and the U.S. continues to raise fears of wider regional instability.

Security analysts say there are fears that more frequent exchanges between the two sides could mean more military incidents, and potentially a wider war that will affect strategic energy routes and regional security in the Middle East.
