Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticized the US president Donald Trump heavily and accused him of insulting Brazil as well as Brazil's diplomatic representative in the United States for what he described as an “insult” to Brazilian diplomats who have not been invited to meet President Lula da Silva.
Lula said Brazil deserves respect on the global stage and warned that no foreign leader should undermine the country’s sovereignty or the country’s diplomatic officials and that they should respect its sovereignty and its diplomatic officials.
“Don’t disrespect us,” he said in public. Lula said in a speech at a news conference that Brazil would defend its national interests no matter if there is a dispute between Brazil and the world governments in this country.
The controversy arises from Trump's comments about Brazil's ambassador, that Lula described as "thoughtless" and inappropriate for someone who has held the office of President of the United States.
Trump’s tone has had some media coverage but Lula said that such statements hurt diplomatic relations and lack the mutual respect that nations hope for.
Lula said diplomacy should be based on cooperation as opposed to personal attacks. Ambassadors represent their countries and should be treated with dignity, he said, regardless of political differences. Brazil's leader said to insult an ambassador is to disrespect the country they represent.
The exchange adds another layer to the tangled relationship between Lula and Trump. The two leaders have long disagreed on democracy and alliances abroad, and on environmental policies and trade.
Lula has since returned home and had a foreign policy oriented towards building relationships with developing nations as well as with big global powers like the United States.

As far as political analysts are concerned, at the very least the dispute will not have a sharp impact on Brazil's official diplomatic links to the U.S., since Trump is not the sitting president.
But it is a sign of the ever more polarized political atmosphere around international affairs and the role of political figures in global discourse.
Brazil remains one of the largest economies in Latin America and a key strategic partner of the United States in trade, agriculture, climate cooperation and regional security.
“The economic interests of these two countries are not only similar, they are also very significant and they have the same interest in each other as long as they stay in touch,” said the expert.
There were lots of Twitter responses to the incident with supporters of both leaders defending their positions. Some praised Lula for defending Brazil's dignity, while others sided with Trump, arguing that political criticism shouldn’t be considered a diplomatic insult.
Lula's message is clear as the debate goes on: Brazil expects to be treated with respect in international relations.
Whether the dispute fades quickly or becomes an international political issue, the issue of diplomatic language and mutual respect will remain in the news and relations of world nations.
