A devastating chain-reaction road accident claimed at least six lives after a truck reportedly suffered a suspected brake failure and crashed into several cars at Hill Park in Bandar Baru, Sibolangit, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, on Friday, July 17, 2026.
According to initial reports, the truck was cruising downhill along a downhill stretch of road when it lost braking power. Unable to stop, the heavy vehicle plowed into at least seven vehicles ahead and triggered a violent chain collision that littered the road in pieces.
Emergency responders, police personnel, firefighters, and local residents rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped inside crushed vehicles. Social media pictures of cars that had been badly damaged and emergency workers using rescue tools and traffic congestion at the accident site were everywhere.
At least six people were confirmed dead in the first casualty count and several others were injured in varying degrees. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Early reports suggest that brake failure on the truck may have triggered the accident, but investigators will conduct mechanical inspections and interview witnesses before determining the cause. Road conditions, vehicle maintenance records, and driver accounts are also likely to be part of the investigation.
The Hill Park route in Sibolangit has many steep inclines and descents, which make it one of the more difficult roads for heavy vehicles. The brake system is monitored regularly, vehicle maintenance is maintained, and speed control is carefully controlled when driving in mountainous places where braking systems are most under pressure.
The accident caused traffic to be extremely disrupted as emergency workers cordoned off the road to rescue people and clear damaged vehicles from the scene to enable rescue work. There were long lines of vehicles parked along the affected road, and drivers were encouraged to use alternative routes while recovery operations were going on.

Government officials expressed their sorrow and expressed the desire that the injured and the people in the region were treated with respect and traffic was restored to normal levels. They also asked that drivers of heavy commercial vehicles check that their vehicles are mechanically sound before starting long-distance trips.
The identities of the victims, the final casualty count, and the mechanical inspection would all be updated further as investigations continue, officials said. The tragic incident has once again made the point that mechanical failures of heavy vehicles on highways are very much possible.
Residents and road safety advocates are calling for stricter inspections of commercial trucks and better enforcement of vehicle safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
