Pakistan Hit By 4.3 Magnitude Earthquake; Tremors Recorded At Shallow 10 KM Depth

The Richter scale moderate earthquake was 4.3 on Wednesday night, shaking parts of Pakistan and sending ripples of panic through the local communities. The earthquake was at around 10:52 PM IST, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The shaking events were particularly shallow: the earthquake originated at a depth of about 10 kilometers beneath the surface, which is common when earthquakes occur at lower ground depths and can be even more noticeable at the surface than deeper quakes.

Precise Location and Epicenter

Data issued by the National Center for Seismology (NCS) placed the epicenter at latitude 28.85 N and longitude 67.15 E, which puts it in the geographically sensitive region of Balochistan with a complex tectonic profile.

  • Magnitude: 4.3
  • Depth: 10 km
  • Coordinates: 28.85 N, 67.15 E
  • Timing: March 4, 2026, 10:52 PM (IST)

Regional Impact and Safety

Local residents in those affected areas experienced a brief but intense shaking session that lasted for a few seconds. No reports to date of major structural damage or casualties are coming through the news, but the local authorities have informed the people that it is necessary for them to stay alert.

The quake arrives at a time of heightened regional tensions, with disputes over military borders between Pakistan and Afghanistan and a larger geopolitical problem around neighboring Iran continuing. But seismologists have validated this was a natural tectonic event arising from the continuing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Why Pakistan is a Seismic Hotspot

Pakistan is in one of the most earthquake-prone places in the world. The country sits at a crossroads of the Indian, Eurasian, and Arabian tectonic plates.

  • Balochistan & KPK: Both sit on top of major fault lines, including the Chaman Fault, making them especially susceptible to shallow and high-intensity seismic activity.
  • Recent Activity: Following a 4.3 magnitude quake in southern Iran and a 4.9 magnitude one in Xinjiang, China, just hours apart, this 4.3 magnitude quake reflects a time of extensive crustal movement over the region.

Safety Measures

Residents are advised by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to:

  • Drop, Cover, and Hold On during the shaking.
  • Avoid glass windows and heavy furniture.
  • Avoid using elevators and stay in open spaces if you are outdoors.
