Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, was placed under an emergency aerial-threat alert early in the morning of 19 September 2026, in which residents received warnings and explosions were heard in parts of Riyadh. This was in the midst when Saudi Arabia's relations with Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement had reached a new stage.
A few hours later, Saudi Civil Defence issued an all-clear for Riyadh and the nearby Al-Kharj, but the alert has raised fresh concerns about the growing conflict in the region.
Riyadh Residents Get Hostile Aerial Threat Warning
The first warning was issued just before 3 a.m. local time in Saudi Arabia via the National Early Warning Platform.
Residents in Riyadh received a message warning them that the area was under a “hostile aerial threat” and were told to take safety precautions. The alert was lifted after the immediate danger was considered to have passed, officials said.
A second warning was issued for Riyadh and Al-Kharj. Saudi Civil Defence again declared the danger over shortly after.
Explosions heard across the capital
AFP journalists in Riyadh reported hearing two explosions after the first alert was issued. A Reuters journalist also reported hearing two booms in the city's Olaya area.
But no official explanation for what happened was provided. Online accounts of the incident have described the incident as a missile or drone attack, but those claims should be evaluated with caution until they have been confirmed.
And Saudi authorities also did not immediately confirm that a projectile had struck Riyadh.
Houthi attacks add to security concerns
The Riyadh alert comes in the midst of the intensifying attacks between Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
Reuters reported Houthi fighters have launched drones and missiles toward Saudi cities as fighting in Yemen escalates. Saudi forces have also conducted strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.
The Houthis are stepping up their military activity after a maritime blockade has started between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. There are also growing concerns over the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait, a major international shipping link.
Earlier Alerts Across Saudi Arabia
The Riyadh warning followed alerts in other parts of Saudi Arabia. Reuters reported that warnings were issued Friday night for areas like Jeddah, Taif, Khamis Mushait and Al Ula. No immediate information on the threat was given.
Saudi authorities also reported incidents of drones and falling debris in recent days.
