September 19, 2026, is six years since Liverpool signed Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers. What began as a major attacking addition to Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool side and what was instantly a big part of the club's history was it.
Today the anniversary has a much deeper meaning. Jota died in a road traffic accident in Spain on July 3, 2025, at the age of 28, along with his brother André Silva. Liverpool fans go on to remember the Portugal international through songs, tributes and his famous No. 20 shirt.
Liverpool signed Jota on 19 September 2020
Liverpool officially announced Jota on 19 September 2020 after a long-term transfer from Wolves.
The 23-year-old arrived at Anfield at the time after a spell at Wolves. Liverpool’s official announcement described him as a versatile attacker who can play across the forward line.
He was given the No. 20 shirt, a number that would later become associated with his Liverpool career.
Jota became an important player very soon.
Jota was instantly on the pitch at Liverpool. In the early stages of the 2020-21 season, he scored his first goals for the club and was immediately part of Klopp’s attacking plans.
And one of his most impressive early performances was against Atalanta in the Champions League, when he scored a hat-trick.
In the 2021-22 season Jota scored 21 goals in all competitions as Liverpool were trying to win four major trophies. He helped the club win the League Cup and FA Cup.
Premier League Champion With Liverpool
Jota was also part of Liverpool's 2024-25 Premier League title-winning squad.
His last season at Anfield also produced an even bigger moment when he scored against Everton in the Merseyside derby in April 2025.
That goal would ultimately become the final goal of his Liverpool career.

The fans have sung his name at Anfield; fans have displayed tributes for his contribution to the club. At the first anniversary of his death in July 2026, Liverpool unveiled a permanent memorial for Jota and his brother at Anfield and fans and club representatives came to pay tribute to him.
The Liverpool anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” has also become an emotional part of tributes to Jota.
Six Years Later, His Legacy Remains
Six years after Liverpool announced his transfer, Jota’s story is not only written in statistics but in the moments in which he created for fans.
Jota left a mark on Anfield with his early goals and in cup competitions and his role in Liverpool's 20th league title.
Liverpool fans have a day to remember him now as well, on September 19, the day of his arrival and the player they lost far too soon.
