Russia claims that its armed forces carried out a major military operation in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, destroying a full Ukrainian platoon.
The Russian Ministry of Defence also said that its forces had attacked a military base in Kyiv as part of a series of coordinated attacks on Ukrainian defense forces.
The Russian officials said the operation focused on Ukrainian troop positions in the Kherson region where fighting has continued between the two sides despite a shift of front lines in the last few months. Moscow said that precision strikes and artillery fire wiped out a company-sized Ukrainian unit during the offensive. But Russia did not provide evidence to back up its claim.
In a separate statement, Russia said it had targeted a military command or logistics center in Kyiv with long-range precision weapons. The strike was part of a campaign to weaken Ukraine’s military capabilities through command centres, ammunition depots and strategic infrastructure, it said.
Ukrainian officials acknowledged explosions in parts of Kyiv but have not provided any proof of Russia's claims about the destruction of a military facility or of the casualties in Kherson.
Kyiv has said that many battlefield claims by Moscow are exaggerated or unverified, and it would be better to rely on independently confirmed information.
The Kherson region is still one of the most strategic areas of the conflict. Along the Dnipro River it has been repeatedly invaded and attacked since the war began. Control of the area is crucial for logistics and access to southern Ukraine.
Military analysts note that information from active conflict zones is often difficult to verify in real time. Both Russia and Ukraine regularly release battlefield updates that may differ significantly, while independent verification remains difficult due to limited access to frontline areas.
The reported strike on Kyiv is also a reflection of Russia’s continued focus on targeting military-related infrastructure deep in Ukrainian territorial space. In various areas air raid alerts were issued as Ukrainian air defense systems were trying to intercept incoming missiles and drones.
Local officials are investigating the extent of the damage and emergency workers are still working at affected areas.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is in another prolonged phase with drone warfare, missile attacks and artillery exchanges on multiple fronts. International observers continue to call for restraint and emphasize the need for diplomatic efforts to reduce civilian casualties and prevent further escalation.
As the situation evolves, both sides are expected to publish more statements regarding the latest operations. Independent verification of casualties and battlefield developments can take time and so the initial wartime claims should be taken with care until they are confirmed by credible sources.
