In Shuozhou in North China’s Shanxi province a five-year-old child fell from a sixth floor apartment and got caught in the window grille. He was dangling outside the building with his head in the grille and the rest of the body hanging in a life threatening position.
The incident was apparently sudden and onlookers were racing against time to prevent the child from falling any further. The young child was several floors up so even a slight movement could have resulted in his death.
Two men came forward in the middle of the emergency and worked together to rescue the child. Their quick thinking and willingness to put themselves at risk saved them as they tried to get hold of the five-year-old and bring the child back.
According to the details circulating about the incident, the child’s head got stuck in the window grille after falling out. That unusual position may have stopped the child from plunging straight down but it also created another serious hazard, the child was effectively suspended outside the building so any rescue attempt would be very delicate.
The two rescuers “coordinated their efforts to reach the child trapped under the fence and pull him up,” the report said. The operation was done with great care because sudden movement could have caused the grille to break or the child to lose his balance.
The dramatic rescue shows how quickly an everyday situation can escalate into a life-threatening emergency when children are involved. Falls from windows and balconies remain a household safety problem (children are more vulnerable because they’re curious, don’t always know danger is present and are smaller).
The incident in Shuozhou has also highlighted window safety measures in homes with young children, window guards, secure grilles and furniture away from windows can reduce accidental falls. Parents should also make sure children are not left unattended near open windows or on elevated areas.
What makes the Shuozhou incident so striking is that ordinary people were quick to act when the child was in danger. Instead of waiting for a formal rescue response two men reportedly joined forces and tried to help the kid, extraordinary courage in a very dangerous situation.
For the child being caught in the window grille must have been terrifying. Hanging several floors up would have been a huge risk and the child was young enough to not understand or respond to the emergency correctly.
The rescue reminds us how important the first few moments of an accident are quick action, teamwork and coordination can sometimes be the difference between tragedy and survival.
