Spain could be the next country to accept UPI payments in the future, giving Indian travelers and residents the ease to pay with a QR code and not with cash or international cards.

The proposed collaboration could help in boosting tourism and trade between India and Spain, and also cross-border digital transactions. With millions of Indian tourists travelling overseas every year, expanding UPI acceptance is of utmost importance to NPCI International.

What is UPI

UPI is India’s real-time payment system that allows instant transfer of money between bank accounts through mobile applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and other banking services.

Users scan a QR code, enter the amount (if required) and authorize the payment using a secure PIN. The process takes only a few seconds.

Why Spain Matters

Spain is one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations and is growing business and tourism ties with India. If UPI is launched there, Indian visitors can pay directly using the apps that support UPI without having to bring huge amounts of foreign currency to the country.

And the move could also encourage more Spanish merchants to cater to Indian tourists while simplifying payment acceptance.

Countries where UPI already works

UPI has already been extended to a number of countries through partnerships with local payment networks and merchants. These include:

Singapore, France, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles.

In many of these destinations, Indian travelers can scan designated QR codes using supported UPI apps to pay for shopping, restaurants, transport, and other services.

Benefits for Indian Travelers

International rollout of UPI has several benefits:

No need to carry huge amounts of cash. Quick and secure QR code payments. Less foreign exchange friction. Instant payment confirmations. Familiar payment experience with existing UPI apps. Lower transaction costs than some international payment methods. Global recognition of India’s digital payments.

UPI has become one of India’s biggest fintech success stories, processing billions of transactions every month. Numerous countries are now looking at partnerships with India to adopt similar payment infrastructure or integrate with UPI.

The expansion into Europe shows increasing trust in India’s digital payment ecosystem and consolidates India’s leadership position in fintech.

What's next

Although the Spain integration is still to be officially launched, discussions indicate that both countries are working towards UPI acceptance. When it is implemented, Indian travelers can pay for hotels, restaurants, shopping, taxis and attractions with their smartphones.

As UPI moves abroad, more countries will join the network and digital payments will be simpler for Indians travelling around the world.
