12 Staff Wait for 1 Student: Unusual Case of II PUC Urdu Exam Absence in Koppal

The Second Pre-University (II PUC) examinations ongoing in Karnataka were recently marked with a distinctly strange incident today morning, in a government examination center in Koppal, India. A total of 12 exam staff stood in preparation for at most a single student who eventually never showed up;  that’s all they worked for over an hour.

That accident, a rare occurrence in Urdu language,  existed outside of the context of the Government Girls Pre-University College in Koppal city hereto designated as the site for the Urdu language paper. This was officially mentioned as the study center according to the official records said only one student was set to attend the examination at this exact center.

The Lone Candidate: Alia

The student, Alia, is a Koppal, Hire Sindogi Pre-University College student. Since only one candidate of her stream chose the Urdu language for this location, the entire machinery of the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) was mobilized to accommodate her single desk.

An Hour of Waiting

As it is normal for board exams to go, the staff showed up well in advance. The doors were opened at 9:30 a.m., the invigilators, supervisors, and support staff were all present at their respective spots. The logistical setup was shocking: 12 staff were formally placed, including the Chief Superintendent, invigilators, room supervisors and security personnel, to conduct the examination for this one student.

The question papers were ready, the answer sheets were maintained on the desk, and the clock started to tick. Even then, from 10:15 AM on, when the official start time arrived, the seat was still vacant. Staff, waiting for traffic or for someone to leave at the last minute, waited till 10:35 AM the final cutoff so that they could enter the examination hall.

Declared Absent

When the clock hit 10:35 AM and no one has seen Alia yet, the authorities had no option but to behave as they would usually when a candidate does not materialize. “We followed government guidelines all the way and were completely ready to administer the exam to the single student. “We had to mark the candidate as 'Absent' and seal the unused materials after waiting for the grace period that had been reserved for the student,” said an official at the Koppal examination center.

The Impact of Absence

There is no specific explanation given as to why Alia fell short, but the event has been a hot discussion in local education circles. One board examination for a single student comes with considerable administrative expenditures and human resources. The 12 personnel working a session that ended in zero attendance illustrates the rigidity, but necessity, of examination protocols. The local authorities of Hire Sindogi PU College are reportedly contacting the family of the student to see if they can understand the reason that this final board paper must not be written with her. Currently, the “one-student centre” stands as a rather rare footnote in PUC examination season – 2026, Karnataka II.
