Parents in Uttar Pradesh have been stunned by this tragic incident which has called into serious question the safety of school transport in the state. Ananya, a 7‑year‑old UKG student of Mount Dev International School, left home for school on 28 February 2026 and never returned. She allegedly fell through a broken floor of her school bus and was run over, leaving her family and neighbors heartbroken.
Ananya was riding with her brother when the event occurred. The floor on the bus was rusted and damaged and it gave way while the bus was moving. She fell through that gap, and before the driver could respond, the rear wheels crushed her. “Uncle, stop! My sister fell!” her brother cried, but it was already too late.
Investigators found the bus was unfit for use. It lacked a valid fitness certificate, permit, or insurance. The parents and local residents were furious and said the school had neglected its responsibility to ensure a certain level of safety for children’s transport. The broken floor, which was not repaired, caused the accident, and so this neglect itself led directly to the accident.
Her family was wracked by intense distress. Her brother, who bore witness to the accident, was traumatized. Community parents joined the protest, calling for accountability from the school and vigorous action to be taken by officials concerned. The disaster brought into view the danger for kids who depend on poorly maintained school buses.
The school management and bus operators were named after police registered a case, said authorities. Officials acknowledged that the bus was operating illegally. The district's administration promised tough inspections of school vehicles and punishment for violations.
This tragedy is not for one child, however it can be seen in the context of the general neglect suffered by schools’ transportation systems. A number of buses in India operate without proper maintenance or certification, placing children’s lives at risk. The incident has raised demands for stricter enforcement of safety rules and for schools to be held to account.
Ananya’s death is a sobering reminder of the need for safety in school transport. A broken bus floor should never have killed a child. For her family, it is an irreplaceable bereavement. For society at large, it is a wake‑up call and a clarion call to do more to secure checks, hold accountable schools, and create safer travel opportunities for all children.
