TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has made strong allegations against BJP workers, who stormed his party’s office on Camac Street in Kolkata early Thursday. “What happened was a disgusting act of law breaking,” he said, and the attackers vandalised the place, assaulted party workers and destroyed electronic equipment.
The controversy has triggered a fresh political battle in West Bengal with Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party at loggerheads. Banerjee claimed that the attack took place around 4 am while he was away in New Delhi.
Banerjee also posted a video of the alleged incident on the social media platform X, and questioned the authorities' response. He called on the West Bengal Governor, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the Prime Minister’s Office to take note of the matter. The TMC leader also asked the judiciary, particularly the Calcutta High Court, to look into the situation and ensure that the rule of law was upheld in the state.
Banerjee claimed that BJP workers who he described as armed entered the party office and attacked people inside. He claimed mobile phones were stolen, furniture was destroyed and the premises were ransacked. Electronic equipment at the office was also destroyed during the incident.
The TMC MP expressed anger over the late response from the Kolkata Police, according to his statement. Party workers and lawyers repeatedly contacted the police after the alleged attack, he said, and no reply from the police was received for more than two hours.
The TMC leader called the lack of immediate police action “outrageous and unacceptable.” He demanded immediate arrest of everyone involved and an investigation into those allegedly planning and organising the violence.
Banerjee, too, questioned how such an incident could allegedly take place in the heart of Kolkata without an immediate intervention from law enforcement agencies. No political party or group should be above the law and the alleged delay in police action must be held accountable, he said.

The allegations have added a more serious political dimension to Banerjee's office at Camac Street. The incident comes just days after the West Bengal Police filed an FIR against Banerjee, TMC MP Derek O’Brien and others in relation to obstruction and assault of police personnel.
The previous dispute was apparently over the removal of an allegedly unauthorised hoarding at 9, Camac Street. The issue became politically sensitive after officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, accompanied by Kolkata Police personnel, removed a signboard with the words “All India Trinamool Congress” from the building housing Banerjee’s office.
The latest allegations are therefore being viewed against the backdrop of an already tense political situation. Banerjee has directly questioned BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and accused the BJP of intimidation and political pressure against the Trinamool Congress.
In a democratic political system, violence and vandalism should not be allowed. Banerjee said the incident raised serious questions about the treatment of political opponents and the ability of authorities to keep law and order.
The TMC MP asked for an investigation of the alleged attack and was seeking to determine how and by whom, who planned, organised and directed those involved. He also called on the police to answer for their failure to act in a timely manner even though party workers and lawyers had been told to contact them and they did not respond very quickly.
The incident is going to strengthen the political struggle between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal. Political violence and intimidation are frequently claimed by both parties and it is the most sensitive thing for the state of West Bengal.
As the controversy continues, police and other authorities will be on the receiving end as well as any official response from the BJP to Banerjee’s allegations. What has been an issue has once again placed Camac Street at the centre of a major political dispute and Banerjee wants to see action taken against the person who attempted to subvert the rule of law.
