Abu Azmi Demands Free IPL Tickets: MLA Sparks VIP Culture Debate in Maharashtra

A fresh controversy has erupted after Abu Azmi urges free IPL tickets provided to elected representatives of Maharashtra, so a new battle will erupt in the elections which are stirring opposition in Marathi public. He has clearly said, through his comments, that if Maharashtra's lawmakers are getting free IPL tickets, then they should have the same rights as those in Karnataka.

Azmi replied to that question, “Karnataka has given us so if Maharashtra does also, I welcome it.” And then whether elected individuals should be able to participate in it is surely open for debate. Some had their answer, some did not, but it certainly raised some waves.

An urgent public interest in the Indian Premier League would sell out tickets immediately and most fans didn’t realize that until just minutes ago. To many fans, the cost of going to a match is very expensive and politicians who take the initiative to ensure that supporters enter it are even more frustrating.

Critics say those demands help reinforce the growing gulf between our representatives and the world we serve. At social media there was unequivocal denunciation against such action: the so-called “VIP entitlement culture” in which the powerful can access benefits not for most of our citizens, they argued.

Political observers maintain that some protocol-based privileges exist for elected professionals but entertainment perks such as free sports tickets are outside the scope of public view. On the issue of whether public office should be used to provide for such benefits, especially when inflation, unemployment, and public welfare are of particular interest.

More quickly though, the more transparency and accountability requires and hence, the more demands there are, for that is not a whole lot closer to a reality than in the past. It’s an old practice for the opposition because of the fact that has been an informal practice in a lot of states and events and it has been in place informally ever since.

The issue has also led us to reconsider governance priorities for our country. At a time when people are paying premium prices for IPL tickets, the optics of legislators’ requests for free access to IPL matches have not pleased the public.

The debate continues as it plays out and our options for Maharashtra officials moving forward are whether to respond to a public demand, or separate ourselves. For all our best advice for the public, the public can respond to the notion that privilege is being misused at any point in time.
