Ahmedabad is taking an even more radical step forward in modernising its urban parking system with the launch of 280 smart flap parking slots in a busy part of CG Road. A new parking network for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) technology and technology integration of physical parking barriers and sensors and digital payment has been introduced to make parking more organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) with new parking system.
The smart parking facility has been installed on CG Road between Stadium Cross Road and Panchvati Cross Road, one of the city’s most busy commercial and high traffic areas. With parking demand often exceeding the available space in busy parts of Ahmedabad, the new system is aimed at providing vehicles with the structure to park in specific parking spaces.
In contrast to traditional parking arrangements, the new system uses individual smart flaps to control access to parking spaces. Sensors are used in the system to determine the availability or occupancy of a slot. Once a vehicle is positioned in a slot and digital payment is completed, the parking flap is unlocked through the system.
The payment process is based mainly on digital transactions. Users will pay using QR to make payments, not cash. The automated flap mechanism will take the payment to the parking space once the payment is made. This is in line with the larger trend of cashless and technology-based public services.
For motorists, the concept would make it a lot easier to find and use authorised parking spaces if the technology works. Rather than relying on parking attendants and manually managed spaces, the system is designed to make it more automated. Sensors and restricted access can also be useful in reducing unauthorised occupation of those parking slots.
But this facility is only for four-wheelers. Two-wheelers and other vehicle categories will not be able to use these smart flap parking spaces. This makes the new infrastructure particularly relevant for car owners visiting offices, shops, restaurants and other establishments along the CG Road corridor.
The introduction of 280 slots also highlights the increasing challenge of parking in Ahmedabad’s increasingly busy commercial areas. CG Road sees a lot of visitors during the day and there is a constant pressure on space. Unorganised roadside parking can make parking more difficult for pedestrians and for businesses and motorists.
QR payments could also ease some of the practical difficulties of cash-based parking collection. The digital transaction process can create an electronic record of payments and can potentially make the payment process faster. Motorists who are not familiar with QR-based parking systems could also require some time to get into the new system.
The success of the initiative, however, will rely on how consistently the technology works. Sensors need to be able to identify vehicles, QR payment systems need to be working and the physical flaps need to respond properly after successful payments. Any technical glitches could quickly turn what is intended to be a convenient smart parking solution into another source of frustration for motorists.

Maintenance will therefore be a big part of the project. Smart infrastructure needs to be maintained and repairs are performed on a frequent basis so that users can access the spaces without delay. Parking locations, for example, need to be clearly defined at the beginning of the project which will be key for the first time.
The CG Road project is a shift in the way cities are responding to everyday urban problems. Parking seems like a relatively small civic problem but managed parking can significantly change the flow of traffic, road etiquette and customer experience in city-centric commercial districts.
The 280 new slots offer Ahmedabad’s car owners an additional organised parking option on one of the city’s most important roads. The combination of automated flaps, sensors and QR-based payments gives the facility a distinctly technology-driven character. Now the real test will be whether the “smart” system still works when hundreds of commuters start using it every day.
