The alleged thief is Harshida Rajendrakumar Shetty, who allegedly took the valuables from a jewellery showroom in Nikol and fled with an accomplice in multiple states. The 38-year-old woman had taken the ornaments on May 11 from Abhushan Jewellers situated inside Gravity Shopping Mall, in the Nikol area of Ahmedabad, the police said.

A formal complaint was filed for the theft at the Nikol Police Station after it was discovered. According to the complaint, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch had a serious investigation into this matter and established several teams to follow the suspect. Police officials also said investigators examined nearly 300 CCTV video recordings from several locations to reconstruct the escape route and trace the suspects behind the crime.

Police reportedly used the footage to track Harshida Shetty, who lives in New Naroda in Ahmedabad. A few items of the valuables (the jewellery had been stolen, amounting to about ₹22.54 lakh) were recovered by the police during investigations. Officials said that the robbery was a well-planned operation of the accused with her suspected co-conspirator, who was referred to as Mayur Ashokbhai Mali, who lived in Vastral.

The two escaped Ahmedabad on a motorcycle not long after the theft, investigators say. They reportedly crossed Udaipur and Jaipur before arriving in Delhi to avoid police observation. But apparently, things turned drastically elsewhere, in Delhi. Police reported that Mayur Mali had left Harshida Shetty in a hotel and fled with most of the stolen gold ornaments, leaving her behind.

As officials carried out the arrest operations, they managed to recover several valuable gold items from Shetty's possession. These were a gold bracelet estimated at ₹9.98 lakh, an eagle-embossed gold ring studded with white stones worth ₹1.34 lakh, a gold mangalsutra for ₹7.43 lakh, and a gold chain worth ₹3.62 lakh. A mobile phone was also seized in the operation. The accused has now been handed over to the Nikol police for further questioning.

Police said a thorough investigation is ongoing to find out how the theft was organised and whether other people were implicated in the conspiracy. The authorities are also conducting searches to find and capture the absconding accomplice, Mayur Ashokbhai Mali, who, based on what they say, carried a large amount of the stolen jewellery.

The case has also stunned local business owners and jewellery traders in Ahmedabad, particularly since the theft was committed by an insider who used her position and knowledge of the store’s operations to commit the crime. The probe has been registered in the pertinent sections in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further cases will ensue based upon the investigation, said police officers.

The case has once again exposed the weaknesses of internal security systems and employee verification processes in value-laden jewellery stores around the country.
