Airtel Payments Bank Names Shabnam Sinha as New Chairperson, Replacing Sunil Mittal

Airtel Payments Bank is due for a major leadership transition on October 1, 2026, with Shabnam Sinha to take over from Sunil Bharti Mittal as chairperson. The appointment was made public by Bharti Airtel on August 17, and it is a big shift at the top of one of the top payments banking companies in India.

Sinha currently serves as an independent director on the board of Airtel Payments Bank. She has more than three decades of experience in development banking, investment finance, public policy, blended finance, and private-sector projects. She has done a long-term stint at the World Bank, where she worked on development finance and large-scale programmes in India and other countries.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, is a non-executive chairman of Airtel Payments Bank. His stepping down from the chairperson position is a change in leadership, but it also maintains the same relationship with the Bharti group.

Who is Shabnam Sinha?

Shabnam Sinha has built a career in development finance, financial inclusion, governance, and policy. She has more than 30 years of experience and has led development finance and public sector initiatives, according to Airtel Payments Bank.

Sinha helped expand India’s portfolio from $500 million to $4 billion during her time with the World Bank, as outlined in her biography on the board website. Her work has been focused on governance, risk management, blended finance, and initiatives supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises, women entrepreneurs, and startups.

Her experience also extends into technology-led development. She has worked on digital initiatives such as artificial intelligence and public infrastructure, as well as skills development and entrepreneurship. This combination of financial-sector experience and public policy know-how could be of particular interest to Airtel Payments Bank in the context of digital financial services.

Sinha was already involved in the governance of the bank before becoming the incoming chairperson. She has been an independent director and chaired the Special Committee on Monitoring Frauds, as well as the Risk Management and IT committees.

Her appointment is therefore a transition from an independent board role to the top job at the bank. It also comes at a time when payments banks and digital financial services are evolving rapidly, with an emphasis on digital transactions, financial inclusion, fraud prevention, and technology-driven banking.

Airtel Payments Bank is India’s first payments bank. It was launched by Bharti Airtel in January 2017 with the aim of making banking services accessible to customers through digital and retail channels. The bank’s goal is to provide simple and easy-to-understand financial services to customers at all levels of the country.

The bank has a board that comprises professionals who are familiar with banking, technology, investment, and corporate management. Anubrata Biswas is still Managing Director and CEO, and other board members are Gopal Vittal, Harjeet Kohli, Muralidaran Natarajan, and Padmaja Alaganandan.

What the Leadership Change Means for Airtel Payments Bank?

Sinha’s appointment could put a greater emphasis on governance, financial inclusion, and risk management. With experience in development finance and public policy, she might be able to help the bank modernize its technology-based business model and reach people who are not getting access to traditional banking.

Payments banking is becoming a critical part of India’s digital financial ecosystem. Mobile payments, digital wallets, banking correspondents, and other technology-based delivery channels have changed the way people use and understand financial products. Airtel Payments Bank has tried to use Airtel's huge distribution network and digital infrastructure to reach customers in urban and rural areas across India.

Fraud prevention and cybersecurity will be more important under the new leadership. Sinha’s current role at the bank’s Special Committee on Monitoring Frauds gives her direct experience with one of the most important challenges in digital financial services. As digital transactions grow, financial institutions will have to strengthen customer protection, fraud detection, and risk-management systems.

The leadership transition also reflects the changing nature of corporate governance in India’s financial services sector. Payments banks are no longer just a founder-led or promoter-led institution; they now require specialist knowledge in technology, regulation, risk, finance, and customer protection.

Sunil Bharti Mittal’s transition comes after years of working with the bank and the wider Bharti group. Airtel Payments Bank is still part of Bharti Airtel’s ecosystem related to telecommunications and digital services. The change of leadership at the bank is of great significance not only for the financial-services business but also for the wider Bharti group.

Sinha is expected to take the chairperson position on October 1, 2026. The current leadership structure will remain in place. Her experiences in development finance, governance, and financial inclusion will shape the bank’s agenda as it navigates India’s rapidly growing digital banking ecosystem.

Sinha’s appointment makes her one of the most prominent women leaders in India’s financial and technology-connected banking industry to take on a senior governance role. Her experience in international development finance, public policy, and private-sector projects could provide Airtel Payments Bank with a new perspective in the next phase of growth.
