Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav yesterday announced a big financial assistance programme to women in Uttar Pradesh of ₹40,000 per year under the proposed ‘Stree Samman Samriddhi Yojana’ if his party returns to power in the state. The move has put welfare measures for women on the agenda of politics ahead of 2027 elections in Uttar Pradesh.
The proposed scheme is about the development of women and Samajwadi Party's (SP) agenda is wider, he added through his speech as an economic empowerment programme for women. If the Samajwadi Party forms the next government of Uttar Pradesh, he said, the programme will provide women with the same economic security and respect.
The promise is significant because Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest state and elections are closely watched for their implications for national politics. Women now make up a large share of the electorate so political parties have more and more likely to focus on direct financial assistance, employment, safety, education and social welfare.
The proposed ₹40,000 per annum payment would be an enormous financial commitment to a large number of the benefit recipients. However, the Stree Samman Samriddhi Yojana is currently an election promise made by Samajwadi Party and not an existing government scheme. This benefit would only be available if the party forms the government and then implements the programme. There are reports that the promise is in the form of an annual financial support of ₹40,000 for the poor women in Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh Yadav’s announcement is also in keeping with Samajwadi Party’s own effort to boost women’s participation in its agenda. Women-oriented programmes have been highlighted and the party has stressed the need to strengthen women’s safety, education and financial support. So the proposed scheme is not only a cash-assistance programme but is also part of a political push to bring women’s socio-economic participation to the fore.
Women voters are expected to play a crucial role in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. In this regard both major political camps are likely to have more emphasis on women-oriented policies as they seek to consolidate support among this important electoral group. The Samajwadi Party’s strategy has also been based on its PDA framework that refers to its outreach to backward classes, Dalits and minorities and women are a significant part of its political strategy.
The financial aspect of the proposal is likely to attract considerable attention. A yearly payment of ₹40,000 might help eligible households in dealing with costs related to education, healthcare, household needs or livelihood activities. At the same time, eligibility, number of beneficiaries, funding requirements and implementation mechanism should be addressed if the proposal is to replace an election commitment with government policy.
The budget also brings direct benefit welfare measures to the forefront of Indian electoral politics. Many states have introduced or expanded programmes offering financial assistance to women, and political parties have increasingly used such programs as a way to show that they are committed to household economy and to women’s independence.
For the Samajwadi Party the proposal gives the 2027 election campaign a clear women-centric element. It also allows the party to distinguish its policy platform from those of its political rivals. If it does become reality, whether the promise actually works will depend on voter priorities, implementation credibility, the overall election manifestos and the welfare proposals of other parties.
For now, ₹40,000 annual assistance is a commitment rather than a real benefit. Women in Uttar Pradesh should therefore distinguish between election promises and an official government scheme. Any future eligibility rules, registration process, payment schedule or implementation details would need to be formally announced if the Samajwadi Party comes to power.

As Uttar Pradesh draws closer to the 2027 Assembly elections, women-focused welfare will remain a major political issue. In fact, the proposed Stree Samman Samriddhi Yojana proposed by Samajwadi Party already has been put on the political agenda and could become an integral part of the Samajwadi Party’s narrative in the next few months.
