Sharma Samajwadi Party president and Mulayam Singh Yadav also criticised the police action at the time of the CJP protest that was taking place in the present time and questioned the conduct of the cops. When the protest activists protested, Yadav said: “Will you tear the clothes of daughters?” and said the way the police handled protesters was bad and he called for accountability.
The statement comes after the ruling alliance and Opposition parties have traded barbs over how police handled the protest. Some Opposition leaders have said the government used excessive force to disperse protesters and to hold political leaders at the protest.
Akhilesh Yadav expressed concern about the reports and visuals coming from the protest site and the images of women participants. Law enforcement agencies should be careful when dealing with peaceful demonstrators and women's dignity and rights should be respected in the protests, he says.
As the Samajwadi Party leader said, democratic societies need to allow citizens and elected representatives to express dissent peacefully. If you use force against protesters, it sends the wrong message and asks questions about the government’s commitment to democratic values.
Hence, by extension, several Opposition leaders have intensified their criticism of the police action and others in the protest.
