Andhra Doctor Dies By Suicide In Hyderabad Over US Visa Rejection

A 38-year-old woman doctor from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district allegedly died by suicide in her Hyderabad flat, reportedly driven to depression after her application for a US visa was repeatedly rejected. The tragic incident came to light over the weekend after her family members, unable to reach her, broke open the door to her flat.

The deceased has been identified as Dr. Rohini (age reported variously as 35 or 38), who was residing in Padma Rao Nagar, Hyderabad.

The Crushing Disappointment

According to police and family statements, Dr. Rohini was a highly driven and dedicated medical professional who had completed her MBBS abroad (in Russia or Kyrgyzstan, per different reports). She had spent years preparing for the rigorous US qualifying exams with the long-term goal of specializing in internal medicine and setting up her own clinic in the United States.

  • Big Aspirations: Her mother, Lakshmi, told reporters that Rohini had "big dreams" and believed the US offered better professional opportunities and income compared to India.
  • The Setback: Rohini's struggle with disappointment and depression intensified in recent months after her US visa application was rejected. The failure to secure the visa, which would have allowed her to pursue her career goal, left her "mentally exhausted and isolated," her mother confirmed.
  • Additional Distress: Initial police reports suggest the failure of a recent marriage proposal to materialize around the same time also contributed to her profound distress.

The Discovery and Suicide Note

The incident is suspected to have occurred on Friday night. The family, who live in a different locality in Hyderabad, were alerted on Saturday by the domestic help and the building watchman after Dr. Rohini did not answer knocks on the door. After forcing entry, she was found dead on the cot. Police suspect she may have taken an overdose of sleeping pills or injected herself, though the exact cause of death awaits the post-mortem report.

Chilkalguda Police confirmed that a suicide note was recovered from the flat. The note purportedly detailed her deep depression and specifically cited the rejection of her US visa application as a contributing factor to her extreme step.

The Chilkalguda Police have registered a case of suspicious death and the body was handed over to the family for final rites in Guntur after the post-mortem examination.
