In an era where most stories of violence against daughters-in-law dominate media accounts, the tragic contradictions of such incidents have emerged in the Karekurchi village in Gubbi Taluk, Tumakuru. A 60-year-old woman named Bhramarambike was found dead, reportedly as a suicide after her daughter-in-law verbally attacked her to the point she reached the extreme, according to her relatives. It has rippled through the "Kalpataru Nadu" (land of coconut trees) as its inhabitants find it difficult to absorb the tale of a domestic conflict that ended in violence.
The Root of the Conflict: A Divided House
The friction within the house, however, is about daughter-in-law Kavyashree, who wants a nuclear family setup, local reports and family statements said. Kavyashree was said to have begun living apart in the same house, cooking and keeping up with home tasks on her own to separate herself from her mother-in-law. It allegedly worsened as Kavyashree began urging her husband, Manukumar, to move to Bengaluru. Thinking her son would be away from her (and alone in her old age), Bhramarambike became mentally and physically unwell. The fear of abandonment is believed to have driven her to suicide.
Discovery and initial suspicion
Bhramarambike was found hanging in a pump house about 200 metres from the family’s farmhouse on Wednesday morning. Her son Manukumar found her in mid morning, brought the body to the ground and then told Chelur Police. This case seemed a bit strange for a while. Police officers responding to the crime soon observed that one of the victim’s eyeballs was missing or badly harmed -- sparking initial suspicions of murder. But a close-up forensic examination and a consideration of the circumstances offered some clarity:
- What the facts are: Bhramarambike “walked alone” to the pump house at approximately 1:45am.
- The Injury: Investigators determined that eye injury had occurred accidentally as the body was being lowered from the noose, ruling out the possibility that it might have been experiencing some type of violent struggle before its death.
Police Action and Case Profile
The Chelur Police were also involved in a case against Kavyashree, daughter-in-law who was accused of Abetment of Suicide, the case law said.
A Community in Mourning
The heartbreaking event underscores the complex dynamics of modern family relationships, and the mental health consequences disputes in the home can trigger, especially for older adults. While Kavyashree's involvement will be assessed through the court process, the community in Karekurchi is grieving a mother that could have felt no other options. The son’s and other relatives’ statements are being recorded with police now to provide a timeline for harassment allegations.
