The incident came the day after 60 passengers had a miraculous escape in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) Pallevelugu bus overturned near Kondapi.
The bus, which was going from Kondapi to Madduluru via Ongole, had to survive when the driver suddenly turned away to avoid the collision with another bus coming from the opposite direction.
The incident occurred on a curved road near Dwaraka Sea Food, officials said. Deep roadside vegetation and poor visibility may have prevented both drivers from seeing each other until the last minute when the APSRTC driver swerved sharply, causing the bus to lose balance and overturn on the roadside.
The bus was packed with almost 60 passengers including 20 students. Panic gripped those on board when the vehicle fell onto its side. Local residents rushed to the scene and along with the passengers helped save those trapped inside before emergency staff arrived on the scene.
The passengers suffered a number of minor injuries (cuts, bruises and body pain) and were treated for the injuries. Ambulances evacuated the injured to Kondapi Government Hospital, where they received first aid and medical treatment. Hospital officials said none of the passengers had life-threatening injuries and they were discharged after treatment.
Police officers arrived at the site within seconds of the report and opened an investigation. It’s not clear if road conditions were bad, visibility was limited by overgrown bushes, or other factors caused the accident. The damaged bus was later removed from the roadside to get them moving again.
Residents of the area have long expressed concerns about the dangerous curve where the accident occurred. They have asked the authorities to trim roadside bushes, improve warning signs and widen the road to avoid similar incidents in the future. Better maintenance and visibility will reduce the risk of accidents along the stretch.

APSRTC offers thousands of bus services across Andhra Pradesh every day and is one of the state’s most dependable public transport companies. Public transport vehicle accidents are still relatively rare but officials continue to stress the necessity of defensive driving and road safety improvements.
The Kondapi bus accident is a reminder of the challenges faced by drivers on narrow and poorly visible highways. While the passengers were scared, the driver’s quick maneuver to prevent a collision and quick action by residents and emergency workers prevented what could have been a far worse disaster.
The authorities will provide a detailed report once they finish their investigation and passengers and local inhabitants hope safety measures will be put in place soon so as to prevent such accidents in the future.
