The flood situation in Assam is still grim as relentless monsoon rains have inundated vast areas across the state. More than 5.65 lakh people’s lives have been affected so far and 21 more deaths have been reported, which reflects the state’s worst flood event in this year’s season.
There are still many districts under water due to overflowing rivers the Brahmaputra and its tributaries especially that inundate villages, agricultural fields, roads and public infrastructure. The heavy rainfall in Assam as well as neighboring states has led to an increase of river levels, forcing thousands of families to leave their homes and shelter in relief camps.
State disaster management agencies, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army and local administration, have intensified rescue and evacuation operations. Boats and helicopters are now used in areas with the worst-hit areas to rescue stranded residents and deliver critical supplies.

The authorities established many relief camps where displaced families are taken care of with food, water, medical attention and temporary shelter. But continuous rainfall has made access to remote villages so hard for rescue teams to reach.
The floods have also done extensive damage in agriculture and cropland has been flooded with thousands of hectares of cropland inundated. Farmers have huge financial losses as standing crops are destroyed. Livestock losses and damaged rural infrastructure have compounded the humanitarian crisis.
Transportation is also severely disrupted as well. Many roads have been washed away or submerged and rail services in flood-hit areas have been affected. Schools in vulnerable areas have been closed as a precautionary measure.
The India Meteorological Department has also predicted that more rain will be forecast to hit northeastern India and officials are closely monitoring river levels. Residents living in low-lying areas are advised to stay alert and heed evacuation orders issued by local authorities.
Wildlife has not been spared. Floodwater is affecting protected areas around Kaziranga National Park too, with the animals moving toward higher ground because of high floodwater levels. Wildlife movement managers are monitoring wildlife movement to prevent accidents and ensure animal safety.
The Assam government assures that all steps are taken to assist affected communities. Relief materials, financial assistance and emergency medical services are being mobilized for those displaced by the floods.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, and people have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel to flood-hit areas and to cooperate with emergency agencies. With weather forecasts indicating more rainfall in the coming days, officials remain on high alert, hoping river levels will start to diminish soon.
