A shocking incident suspected to be an honour killing has sent shockwaves across Karnataka’s Ballari district after a newlywed groom was brutally murdered just hours after his wedding reception. The killing has instilled alarm as the Batti area of Ballari city, where crime against family honour is played out, also brings up awareness, and even more so, the consequences of it.
The deceased was identified as Nabi Rasool, who had married the woman he loved just a day before the attack. Police believe that the murder could have been committed due to opposition from the bride’s family over the love marriage.
Murder hours after the wedding reception
According to information, Nabi Rasool and the young woman had recently solemnised their marriage despite the bride’s family’s resistance. They had their wedding reception as they were all about to start a new chapter in their lives.
But within a few hours of the reception, tragedy struck when Nabi Rasool was allegedly brutally attacked and murdered.
The shocking timing of the incident—less than 24 hours after the wedding—has left Ballari residents shocked.
Honour Killing Angle Under Investigation
Police are investigating the possibility that the murder was an honour killing, allegedly committed because the victim had married against the wishes of the bride’s family.
As early as now, the bride’s family and some of her relatives were vehemently opposed to the relationship and marriage. Now, investigators are looking into whether that opposition led to the fatal attack.
But officials have not yet confirmed the motive, but the honour killing angle has been one of the primary lines of investigation.
Senior police officials visit the crime scene
Ballari Superintendent of Police Suman D. Pennekar visited the scene with senior police officers soon after the incident occurred.
Forensic experts were also called to collect evidence, and the body was shifted for post-mortem examination.
Police have started questioning family members, relatives, and other people connected to the case to establish the sequence of events leading to the murder.
Investigation Underway
And police are collecting CCTV footage, mobile phone records, and witness statements to identify those responsible.
Police are also checking whether the couple sought protection before or after their marriage in view of any threats.
And officials are saying those found involved in the crime will face strict legal action.
There is increasing concern about honour crimes
The incident has once more highlighted the continuing problem of honour-based violence in parts of the country where couples who marry against family wishes often face threats, harassment, and, in extreme cases, fatal attacks.
Legal experts and social activists have said that every adult has the constitutional right to choose their life partner, regardless of caste, religion, or community.
Police Appeal
Police have appealed to the public not to spread unverified rumours about the case while the investigation is ongoing.
There are still many more facts to be discovered - namely, the motive and the identities of the accused - as investigators work to determine the motive and identities of the accused.
