A tragic road accident in Bengaluru’s Vijay Bank Layout has put the city back under the microscope for both roads and people’s safety, with a Class 9 student being killed and another injured in a late-night collision. The incident happened at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday on RTO Road, a road residents say has been under poor lighting for several months.
According to preliminary information, two little boys were travelling on a motorcycle when they collided with a tractor moving ahead of them, and the rider died on the spot. The pillion rider was very seriously injured in the collision and was rushed to a hospital immediately, and is still in critical condition. Doctors are monitoring his condition.
There is speculation that the absence of functioning streetlights along the road was a factor in the accident. They said visibility on the stretch was very poor at the time of the crash, so drivers weren’t able to see vehicles ahead until the evening.
Neighbourhood residents were angry that they had repeatedly contacted authorities about falling streetlights, they said. Several complaints had been submitted over the past few months, but nothing was done to repair or replace the failing lighting system, they said.
Residents say that street lighting is a fundamental part of road safety and could have prevented the disaster if the problem had been handled sooner. Many felt frustrated with officials’ indifference, and that repeated warnings were met with indifference until a fatal accident happened.
Police arrived on the scene soon after learning of the accident and first went to the scene. The damaged motorcycle and tractor involved in the crash were examined. A case is registered, and authorities are now investigating the sequence of events that led to the collision.
Investigators will also look at road conditions, visibility, vehicle speed and whether the tractor had reflectors or lighting. Statements from eyewitnesses and residents will also be part of the investigation.
The incident has reignited concerns about road safety in Bengaluru, where poor infrastructure and poor maintenance of public facilities have often been cited as contributing factors in accidents. Safety experts say proper street lighting is essential for reducing nighttime crashes, particularly on roads used by heavy vehicles and two-wheelers.
People are in shock and mourning after the death of a young student. Municipalities are also being asked to act in a hurry to restore streetlights on the stretch and perform safety checks on other poorly lit streets around the city.
As the investigation continues, this tragedy serves to underscore the necessity of maintaining basic public infrastructure. Citizens and road safety advocates are telling the authorities not to neglect to maintain essential public facilities to the point of loss of lives.
