According to preliminary reports, part of the theatre’s ceiling, including asphaltic roofing sheets and plaster-of-Paris material, collapsed as the audience of the film was watching. The collapse apparently came during heavy rain in Bengaluru and caught moviegoers in the auditorium by surprise.

Three people were injured in the incident, and two of them were injured in the head while another was injured in the leg. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and are said to be out of danger in initial reports.

The collapse caused panic in the theatre, and theatre staff intervened, and the screening was stopped. Some of the audience members decided to leave the theatre, and the theatre management offered refunds for those not able to watch the movie. The damaged section was also covered briefly, and some people who stayed inside were allowed to continue the film.

The roof of the theatre and the way it is kept is also in question, the city has said. Some moviegoers think the theatre maintenance might have been inadequate, though the reason for the collapse of the structure has not been established.

Some reports also suggest rainwater had been leaking into parts of the auditorium at the time of the incident, and the auditorium was leaking a bit of rainwater around the time of the event. Local media reports also said that the ceiling area that appeared to have been affected by the rain was clearly affected by the rain before the ceiling collapsed.

Bengaluru had heavy rainfall in a number of areas on Wednesday, with waterlogging and rain-related disruptions in parts of the city. The Bharathi Theatre incident raised fears of how older and vulnerable structures in the city respond to heavy rain.

The episode also emphasizes the importance of regular structural inspections at public entertainment venues. Cinema halls can accommodate large numbers of people for long periods, so the condition of roofs, ceilings, electrical systems and emergency exits is extremely important for public safety.

Details about the exact cause of the ceiling collapse, the condition of the injured audience members and any action by civic or other authorities are awaited. Any charges of negligence would have to be made through an official inspection or investigation.

Bharathi Theatre is located in the Peenya-Dasarahalli area of Bengaluru and is a functioning cinema venue. The theatre listings identify it as Bharathi Theatre (Peenya).

The rain can be dangerous to buildings and public places in Bengaluru, where roofing and drainage systems are susceptible; the incident has shown this. The authorities and theatre administration will assess the premises before regular screenings resume.
