Bengaluru Metro Drops Station, Cuts Hebbal–Sarjapur Corridor Cost to ₹25,999 Crore

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has altered its ambitious 37-km Hebbal-Sarjapur corridor plan by removing an existing station for cost savings and quicker central government approval. This has reduced the estimated cost of Phase 3A from ₹28,405 crore to ₹25,999 crore, which is a huge achievement in terms of fast approval and smooth execution.

The corridor, which will link Hebbal in the north to Sarjapur in the southeast, is one of the most critical routes in Bengaluru’s expanding metro network. It will relieve traffic congestion on vital IT and residential hubs and is believed to be a reliable alternative to transport.

BMRCL has engaged IIT Roorkee to conduct a detailed impact study to address MoHUA’s concerns about end-to-end double-decker structures. With such designs, safety, efficiency, and cost-effective use of them for their implementation will be determined.

The decision to drop a station reflects BMRCL’s plan for infrastructure expansion along with financial conservatism. Metro projects across India are often delayed by cost escalation and lengthy approval processes, and Bengaluru’s Phase 3A revision is a proactive response to avoid such challenges.

The Hebbal–Sarjapur corridor will also work as a vital component of the city’s metro network as it connects residential districts to commercial districts and IT corridors, if approved by the Government of India. It is also expected to drive real estate development along the line and improve the connectivity of thousands of daily commuters.

Urban planners and transport experts welcomed the cost-cutting measures but emphasized the need for careful planning to ensure that the dropped station does not affect accessibility for local communities. The timeline for construction and rollout will be determined by the final clearance from the central government.

The new Hebbal–Sarjapur metro corridor exemplifies Bengaluru’s drive for cost-effective and sustainable urban transportation solutions. With IIT Roorkee’s work pending and central approval pending, this project would alter connectivity across the city once it gets green-lighted.
