There were eyewitness accounts that the method employed was a calculated one. He had once ordered food and then faked payment through PhonePe. He avoided making the real transaction; it was said that he went with a doctored or phony app with a screen that appeared on it “Payment successful.” The scam was more realistic because of the fact he allegedly asked the cafe employees in the app to give him cash and left them with a confused look at the counter.

The robbery occurred after café staff received little or no real notice that the payment had occurred either in their own bank account or through the official merchant app. When respondents were even more quizzed, they were already cautious before apprehending of the defendant ultimately caught out. This, authorities and local news reports suggest, could also become a one-time transaction. There had been reports of a group of scammers who were found in cafes, mom-and-pop shops and shop floors who were using fast online payments, with activities found in various cities and regions.

The staff can’t keep track of whether each of the payments was accurate and accurately accounted for during peak hours. That’s an admission of a problem with the advent of a broader digital system to pay.

Apps such as PhonePe have transformed ease of use, yet they are not without limits, and user vigilance especially among merchants is paramount. To use the example, businesses should track transactions in their payment dashboard, bank SMS reminder, or sound box confirmation, as one component is always better than the rest. Citizens or business owners should be advised to report any suspicious behavior as it happens and not engage the confrontational parties at point of entry, without adequate guidance. When looking for a secure system with payment verification capabilities, the need for the training of your staff to watch for any issues can be tremendous.

That type of fraud can be significantly reduced by training staff to communicate such abuses to people. As Bengaluru continues to emerge more as a digital and commercial capital, this case helps serve as a caution to our clients to remain on the lookout for convenience tempered by caution before it starts.
