In the glamorous district of Indiranagar we saw a gruesome family feud that crossed every line of morality. A 70-year-old man, former employee at the BMTC, was brutally assaulted and stabbed by his own son following a protracted dispute about the inheritance of ancestral and self-made property.
The Victim and the Wealth
The victim, Munikrishna, retired from service in 2018. For years he had saved and invested heavily and in doing so amassed significant real estate in Doopanahalli. He has three buildings worth around ₹6 crore in the market.
Bone of Conflict: A Will
The dispute stemmed from Munikrishna’s decision concerning the legal heir to his family’s estate. Instead of immediately devolving the properties to his two sons Mohan Kumar and Gajendra, Munikrishna had opted to create a will favorable to his grandchildren. It escalated because Munikrishna had left one of the 3 buildings to his elder brother’s children. Mohan and Gajendra were outraged by this decision and challenged their father asking why his self-made wealth was being spent on his own nephews, and not with his line of lineage.
A Valentine's Night Horror
On February 14, this resentment came out of the bitterness in earnest. Mohan and Gajendra became embroiled in a fitful verbal argument with their father at their home in Doopanahalli. Accusations of physical abuse were levelled further into the argument, with the sons reportedly using an iron rod and a cricket bat to strike the 70-year-old father.
A seemingly terrified Munikrishna supposedly brandished a knife to defend himself and deter his wrathful boys. But it blew up in a tragic tragedy instead. Mohan Kumar was reported to have overpowered his dad, grabbed the knife from his trembling hands, and then plunged that knife into the elder man’s body with deadly intent to kill.
Police Action and Medical Condition
Neighbors notified Indiranagar Police on hearing the commotion. Munikrishna was found in a pool of blood and was rapidly placed in a nearby private hospital. His medical condition is stable but he is under close observation because of his old age and because of the seriousness of the stab wounds, medical sources said. The Indiranagar Police made quick haste, registering an attempted murder case.
The main suspect Mohan Kumar was arrested shortly after. “We hold the accused and the weapon used for the offense has been seized. The dispute seemed totally focused on the ₹6 crore property will,” said a senior police official.
A Growing Concern
This incident has rocked the local society, accentuating the rising frequency of violent property disputes in Bengaluru's booming real estate market. Munikrishna was said to have been a hardworking man who led a simple life despite his wealth, making his sons' betrayal more difficult to carry (and heartrending).
