Residents of a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Bengaluru have raised complaints about extra charges being demanded for meals, calling it “daylight robbery.” The issue reportedly surfaced at Sandwich PG House in the Marathahalli area, where tenants claim they are being asked to pay additional money for food services.
According to the residents, the management of the PG has allegedly asked occupants to pay an extra ₹1,200 if they want to continue receiving meals at the facility. The demand has triggered frustration among several tenants who say food was originally expected to be part of the accommodation package.
Tenants Raise Concerns
Many residents, including students and working professionals, rely on PG accommodations because they offer affordable living arrangements along with basic services such as food. However, tenants claim that the sudden demand for extra charges has put them under financial pressure.
Some residents alleged that they were told they would have to pay additional fees running into thousands of rupees if they wanted to continue receiving daily meals. Those who refuse the extra payment fear they may not be provided food.
Growing Complaints About PG Facilities
The issue has once again highlighted concerns about unregulated PG accommodations in Bengaluru, especially in areas like Marathahalli, which has a large population of IT professionals and students. Many tenants say that sudden price hikes, hidden charges, and lack of transparency in agreements are common problems in PG housing.
Residents are now calling for stricter oversight and clear rules to prevent such practices in paying guest accommodations.
Need for Regulation
Urban housing experts say that clearer regulations and monitoring of PG facilities could help prevent disputes between tenants and operators. They suggest that written agreements detailing services such as food, electricity, and maintenance charges should be mandatory to avoid misunderstandings.
For now, tenants at the PG hostel say they are seeking clarification from the management and hope the issue will be resolved without additional financial burden.
