A dangerous instance of reckless riding on one of Bengaluru’s busy roads has caught the eye of Bengaluru’s residents after a Royal Enfield Hunter rider was caught on camera riding in a zig-zag fashion, colliding with a scooter, narrowly hitting an autorickshaw and fleeing the scene without stopping.
The incident occurred on Queens Road, a busy road in the heart of Bengaluru that is busy to a large extent in many places during the day. Witnesses told us in the police report and in the online accounts that the motorcycle rider was weaving through the road and veered repeatedly and moved into the lanes in an unsafe manner.
The video of the incident (shared on social media) shows the rider in action in the video racing through the traffic at high speed, and appears to show a blatant disregard for basic road safety rules. During his speeding ride, the motorcycle hit a scooter that was going in the same direction.
If the impact sent the scooter rider into a corner, he lost balance for a moment. Fortunately, the rider didn’t crash and continued to stay standing up. The crash could have been far worse in traffic conditions and close to other vehicles on the road.
Just seconds after he collided with the scooter, the Royal Enfield rider came dangerously close to rear-ending an autorickshaw, witnesses said. Only a last-second move prevented the auto from coming right into the accident. Rather than stopping to check on the scooter rider or assess the situation, the cyclist was said to accelerate and speed up and leave the area, the witness said.
The scooter rider in the incident had on a helmet, but the chin strap was not fastened properly. Road safety experts say that a helmet not secured effectively reduces the protection during an accident because the helmet can come off upon impact. It was also noticed that the scooter did not have a left rear-view mirror (a critical safety measure for riders) for controlling surrounding traffic.
The incident is one of the several dangers that cause accidents in Bengaluru, safety advocates say. Reckless riding, speeding, unsafe overtaking, and lane miscommunication are still the main causes of road crashes in the city. Riding safety personnel are now being notified that they must ensure that all essential safety components are in place and that protective equipment is being used properly.
Queens Road links several important areas in central Bengaluru and thus is very busy during peak hours. Aggressive riding in this situation can lead to a serious collision between multiple vehicles and pedestrians.
Viral videos on social media have led to conversations on how to regulate dangerous riding practices and hit-and-run incidents. Many users asked authorities to find the motorcyclist and take the appropriate action under traffic and motor vehicle laws.

The experts on road safety also emphasised the role of defensive driving and riding. But even if an individual road user is reckless, helmets, mirrors, indicators, and compliance with the laws of the road can reduce the number of accidents and prevent accidents, they say.
As we speak, we have no official statement about whether there are any formal complaints filed. But the video has once again brought home to us the need to have a safe road in Bengaluru where traffic volumes and enforcement are ever increasing.
