The Bengaluru-Tumakuru Metro project is not only a planned project but it is the next step towards urban infrastructure in Karnataka, taking the long-awaited Bengaluru-Tumakuru Metro from a proposal to a reality. The Detailed Project Report (DPR), already published by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), was prepared by BMRCL and preparations for construction of the framework are in progress.
This expansive, inter-district grid will prove to be one of Karnataka’s most expensive, significant transport projects. The project is one part of Namma Metro's Phase 4 expansion and is supposed to make for a fast, efficient, and seamless transit connection from the state capital city of Bengaluru to Tumakuru, an area situated close to 70 km from the capital’s industrial park.
Financial & Technical Blueprint
The BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer, Yashwant Chavan, also claimed that the project is estimated at an astronomical ₹20,649 crore. The DPR consultancy was awarded to Arvee Engineering Consultants for ₹1.2 crore. Tenders for the construction first started in November 2025, and at present, field-level studies have started, experts and officials.
- Traffic Pattern Data: Gathering data on commuter flow so train frequency can be maximized.
- Alignment Checks: Finalizing the exact path to reduce obstacles with land acquisition.
Route Details and Key Stations
The proposed corridor has been proposed to be 59.60 km long with a total of 26 stations. From Madavara (BIEC) in Bengaluru, extending the existing Green Line, the route terminates at Nagannanapalya in Tumakuru.
Major Stations are in Progress:
- Makali
- Dasanapura
- Nelamangala
- Nelamangala Tollgate
Transit Hubs:
- T. Begur
- Thippagondanahalli
Industrial Clusters:
- Sompura Industrial Area
- Dobspet
- Hirehalli Industrial Area
Tumakuru City
- Kyatsandra
- Tumakuru Bus Stand
- TUDA Layout
- Nagannanapalya
Economic Impact and Future Vision
Central to this project is a corridor which will also cater to tens of thousands of commuters traversing the two cities for employment and education. This metro will ensure positive economic growth by linking big industrial towns such as Dobspet and Hirehalli together and relieve pressure on the heaps of traffic on National Highway 48 (NH 48). G Parameshwara, the Home Minister, who in particular is a passionate proponent of the project said the state government’s approval of that feasibility study last year was a development that would be a turning point.
Although the case for a full-scale metro began to move up the list of people and business development in Tumakuru, there are arguments being made for the case, which were controversial, but for Tumakuru, the rising population and industrial progress meant the case would not have remained controversial. Also, government officials have suggested if this phase is to end with, there’s also room for expansion into Tumakuru city to form an overall urban transportation network.
Timeline for Construction
Now that DPR has been confirmed and with field work underway, the physical construction should begin in mid-2026. The development is a significant milestone in Namma Metro’s vision of linking satellite towns with the centre of Bengaluru as it seeks to transform the region into an integrated metropolitan area in the city as a “Greater Bengaluru”.
