There has so far been a tragic incident in Bidar of a 21-year-old medical student who apparently committed suicide in a hostel room at Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS). The deceased student is Anishkar Chauhan, a final-year MBBS student.
The college hostel had an incident where the student who survived but was found hanging on a ceiling fan in his room when he got out of it, sending shock signals through the school campus. There were witnesses and hostel workers who reported it and notified the police.
Chauhan hailed from Chincholi in Kalaburagi district, and was in the last stages of medical studies. His death leaves classmates, faculty members and family very hurt. It was said that he was a very passionate student with quite a bright future ahead of those students.
Police officers were soon at the BRIMS hostel with this information and took an initial look around the room. There, authorities confirmed a case and are now investigating the exact reason for the incident. And so far no suicide note has been formally submitted, detectives are studying all possible possibilities including academic stress, personal problems or some other matters.
The event again makes students with high school studies as well as other demanding careers like medicine increasingly come across as the least healthy in mental health. Long study and competition plus pressure to get work done as soon as possible make it harder to handle emotionally stress all at the same time. Schools should offer adequate psychological support and counseling, experts say.
Parents and students at the colleges have issued their condolences and pledged to cooperate with investigation. This has also caused some students’ anxiety and to be able to support each other as individuals with mental health issues that many feel is a lack of support.
The terrible story of this boy reminds us that there is a need for addressing mental health problems among young people so early that the best tools we can have to prevent a potential tragedy in the future are early intervention and dialogue and counseling services available in the moment.
