People in Chennai and other parts of Chennai and the rest of the region should expect a short-term disruption in electricity supply as Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has scheduled maintenance work throughout the substations and distribution networks to be performed on July 1, 2026, as part of the routine maintenance to upgrade power infrastructure and enhance the reliability of electricity supply.
As the power utility said, electricity supply in the affected areas would be suspended from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. But officials said power could be restored earlier if maintenance work was completed on time.
The planned shutdown will be felt in selected localities in the different electricity distribution circles in Chennai. TANGEDCO regularly performs such maintenance in order to upgrade transformers, check power lines, replace ageing equipment and increase overall network reliability. These preventive measures also help to avoid unexpected outages and provide a continuous electricity supply in the long run.
Residents should take necessary precautions before the outage. Mobile phones, laptops, power banks, and other essential electronic devices should be charged ahead of time. Businesses, commercial places, and work-from-home workers are also expected to plan their activities to avoid disruption during the shutdown period.
Water pumps in apartments and residential complexes could also be affected during the power interruption. So residents are encouraged to store sufficient water prior to the outage, especially in areas that rely on electric pumps for daily water supply.
And although the full area-wise list for July 1 is being updated through official maintenance schedules, TANGEDCO has confirmed that only designated maintenance zones will be affected and not the whole city. The utility has assured consumers that all efforts will be made to complete the work within the announced timeframe.
Officials have also said that weather conditions or technical reasons may sometimes cause the maintenance schedule to change. In such a situation, officials stressed that consumers should check the official TANGEDCO notifications and contact the local electricity office for the latest updates.
The scheduled power shutdown comes at a time when electricity demand remains high across Tamil Nadu, and authorities continue to rebuild the state's power distribution infrastructure. Maintenance is an essential element of ensuring the reliable supply of electricity and avoiding large-scale faults.
Consumers who are facing unexpected issues or longer outages beyond the scheduled maintenance period can contact TANGEDCO's customer service representatives for assistance and updates regarding restoration work.
