A huge pothole has formed on the Thane-bound carriageway of LBS Marg at the junction of Veena Nagar Road, opposite Apurva Society in Mulund West, Mumbai.
At around 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet the pothole is now a hazard for thousands of commuters who pass this busy arterial road every day.
The damaged section of the road is located at a high-traffic intersection; many cars, buses, trucks and two-wheelers pass through there in a day.
The pothole is dangerous to the road users and the riders of motorcycles and scooters; the way the road is moving, a sudden attempt to avoid the damaged part could immediately result in collisions, skidding, and loss of vehicle control.
Residents and daily commuters are increasingly concerned about road conditions.
When traffic is heavy and rainy, the pothole is even more dangerous because the water would be in the way and could cover its depth. Accidents and vehicle damage are extremely high in those cases.
We need road maintenance for the public good and quick action by the authorities concerned to avoid accidental injuries and property damage is crucial.
When the traffic can flow, the repair can also help in building public trust in civic infrastructure management.
The concerned authorities, including MMRDA and BMC Infrastructure, should immediately check the location and perform emergency repair work without delay.

Temporary barricading and warning signage should be put up until permanent repairs are complete so that motorists can be notified.
Citizens are encouraged to report road hazards through a public grievance process and to keep working towards urban road safety.
Public participation and swift action from government agencies to make Mumbai’s roads safer is critical.
The fact that the pothole is not filled and leaves commuters unprotected every day puts them at risk of an accident is terrible.
