Heavy rains hit Delhi in the evening when some areas of Delhi were flooded at the same time by a heavy rain in the evening, causing people in certain parts of the city to get flooded and waterlogging and traffic woes in some areas of the city to be extremely bad.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert at night and warned people in Delhi of moderate to heavy rainfall in the next few hours.
Since the early morning, dark clouds had been in place in the city and heavy showers had been taking place from Connaught Place, India Gate, Lajpat Nagar, Rohini, Dwarka, Mayur Vihar, and South Delhi so far. The rain had also reduced visibility in some places and traffic was slow during the morning rush hour.
The orange alert indicates residents should be prepared for adverse weather, with heavy rain, localized flooding, and temporary disruption to transportation, said the IMD.
People should avoid unnecessary travel especially in waterlogged areas and heed weather warnings from local authorities, it said.
The rain also dropped the temperature down, cooling off the heat and humidity of the recent spell of heat. Civic authorities were on the lookout for flooding, blocked drains and traffic jams. Water levels in parts of the city where heavy rainfall was likely to be the cause of water accumulation were kept under surveillance by municipal staff.
The traffic police also advised commuters to plan their travels carefully for slow traffic on some important arteries. Waterlogging in low-lying areas restricted vehicle movement and some public transport services were postponed due to the weather.
The present weather pattern is being influenced by good monsoon conditions in northern India, said IMD. Moisture-laden winds and active monsoon systems will keep driving rainfall in Delhi and neighbouring areas.
The department is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to issue updates on forecasts based on the latest weather developments.
Throughout heavy rainfall, residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid driving through flooded roads, and to be cautious of slippery surfaces.
People should also stay away from weak structures, construction sites, and trees during heavy showers and strong winds.
