A fire broke out at a PG accommodation in Delhi’s Chana Market on Wednesday morning, triggering a major emergency response and a large-scale rescue operation by the Delhi Fire Services.
According to preliminary information, 11 fire tenders were rushed to the location after an emergency call was received from building number 11/5 at Chana Market in the Karol Bagh area between 10:58 am and 10:59 am.
All students staying at the PG are safe, they said. Some were rescued by firefighters, and some managed to escape the building on their own as the fire spread.
Fire personnel were forced to break windows and glass panes during the rescue operation to evacuate students from the building. Cooling operations were ongoing after the fire had been brought under control to stop the flames from rekindling.
Leather Goods Godown In Basement
First information indicates that a leather goods godown was situated in the basement of the building and that PG accommodation was on the first floor.
Local residents claimed that a short circuit had occurred at the premises on Tuesday. They also claimed that the leather stock stored in the basement was not removed even after the incident.
However, there is no official confirmation that the reported short circuit on Tuesday was directly linked to Wednesday’s fire.
The exact cause of the fire was still to be determined.
The incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety in buildings where commercial storage areas and residential or PG accommodation are located close together.
The fire authorities will assess the building and examine all required fire safety solutions and procedures.
Separate Delhi Fire Incident In Hari Nagar.
The Chana Market fire comes a day after another major fire incident was reported in Delhi’s Hari Nagar area.
A massive fire broke out in the parking area of a residential building in Fateh Nagar on Tuesday morning. The fire also caused two cylinder explosions and destroyed four vehicles, reports said.
Eight residents trapped inside the building were rescued by firefighters.
Delhi Fire Service Assistant Divisional Officer Ravi Nath said a fire had broken out in the parking area of a house in Fateh Nagar near Jail Road and Ranbir Bakery.
A Delhi Fire Service officer also said that the fire caused significant damage in the parking area with two cylinders exploding and four vehicles being damaged.
However, the firefighters were able to rescue the eight trapped residents quickly.
The back-to-back incidents have once again highlighted the importance of fire safety inspections, emergency exits and proper storage of combustible materials in densely populated areas of the national capital.
Authorities are still investigating the Chana Market fire and cooling operations are continuing on the site.
