Residents of Delhi-NCR are finally expected to get relief from the scorching heatwave conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, gusty winds, and light to moderate rainfall across the region over the next 48 hours.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi and surrounding NCR areas, warning of thunderstorms, lightning activity, and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph. The sudden change in weather is being attributed to an active western disturbance affecting North India.
According to IMD forecasts, several parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and nearby regions may witness intermittent showers accompanied by cloudy skies through Sunday and Monday. The rainfall is expected to significantly lower daytime temperatures and prevent heatwave conditions for at least the next few days.
On Saturday night, parts of Delhi-NCR already experienced sudden rain and thunderstorms, offering temporary relief from intense summer heat. Dark clouds covered the city, while strong winds and scattered showers were reported in several areas.
Meteorologists have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially while travelling. Waterlogging, traffic congestion, and temporary disruptions in flight or road movement are possible in some areas due to heavy spells of rain and gusty winds.
The maximum temperature in Delhi, which had recently climbed close to 39°C, is expected to dip by several degrees following the rain activity. Weather experts say the current system could keep temperatures below normal for this time of the year.
Meanwhile, authorities have urged people to avoid standing under trees or near electric poles during lightning and strong winds. Commuters are also advised to monitor local weather updates before heading out.
The IMD is continuing to monitor the weather system closely, with additional updates expected if conditions intensify further across the NCR region.
