DK Shivakumar Urges Karnataka Voters to Complete Electoral Roll Revision, Warns of Losing Voting Rights

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to all eligible voters in the state to actively participate in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls beginning June 30, stressing that timely filing of the required enumeration forms is essential to remain on the voters’ list.

Shivakumar told reporters in Vidhana Soudha on Monday that citizens should view the month-long exercise as a civic duty and work closely with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who will conduct door-to-door verification of residents of the state through July 29.

All voters in the state must complete the registration process to safeguard their voting rights. BLOs appointed by the Election Commission will visit every household and distribute the Enumeration Form from June 30 through July 29. Every voter must fill out and submit the form within 30 days along with the required documents and a recent photograph," he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister warned that electors who do not complete the verification process risk having their names excluded from the electoral roll.

He said that Booth Level Officers would visit every household at least three times to distribute and collect the forms.

If you receive the form but do not submit it, your name may not be included in the revised electoral roll, he said, suggesting people not to ignore the exercise.

"Even I Must Fill the Form."

Shivakumar said the verification process applies equally to everyone and public representatives are also needed to participate.

Even I, DK Shivakumar, despite being the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, must fill and submit the enumeration form. Only then will my vote remain valid," he said, stressing that no voter is exempt from the revision process.

Appeal on Welfare Schemes

Shivakumar also made reference to keeping voter records accurate as part of government services at the press conference. Citizens should keep their electoral information updated and everyone should be active in the verification drive, he said.

However, he also explained that government welfare schemes would not be stopped immediately because of the ongoing revision work.

We are not going to stop any benefits immediately. We only need to collect and verify the required information," he said.

He emphasized that, if a person’s name is not on the draft electoral roll it would lead to problems that would need to be resolved during the claims and objections processes.

Statewide Assistance Centres

To aid in the revision process, the Karnataka government has announced the establishment of 49,320 assistance centres across Gram Panchayats and urban wards.

Shivakumar says that these centres will help voters complete their forms and access the documents required for verification.

Citizens can submit various supporting documents such as birth certificates, passports, caste certificates, pension records, housing allotment documents and other officially recognised identity records.

He also said more than 5.5 crore caste certificates are already available in digital format, and many residents can download them through WhatsApp if their mobile number is linked to the records.

In addition to government assistance centres, Booth Level Agents (BLAs) representing recognised political parties will also be allowed to assist voters during the verification exercise. Public awareness campaigns will be carried out in a variety of ways to increase participation.

SIR Schedule

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Karnataka will run from June 30 to July 29.

After door-to-door verification, the draft electoral roll will be published on August 5. The eligible voters will then have the opportunity to file claims or seek corrections if necessary before the final electoral roll is prepared.

The Election Commission has said the aim of the exercise is to make sure that Karnataka's electoral rolls are accurate, updated and inclusive prior to future elections and therefore all eligible citizens should verify their details during the month-long campaign.
