Speech was made at a religious assembly hosted by senior seers and political leaders in Balehonnur in Chikkamagaluru district. The incident occurred at a public religious awareness event (also called “Janajagruti Dharmasabha”) held at the Renukacharya Kalyana Mantapa in the city.

In this programme, Rambhapuri Jagadguru has been seen blessing MLA HD Thammaiah, and discussions have been sparked on DK Shivakumar’s political future. The seer had previously stated, according to those present at the event, that Thammaiah had always supported DK Shivakumar in becoming the Chief Minister.

The MLA replied to the comment, saying that he was very confident that Shivakumar would probably hold the top post in Karnataka politics. The back and forth turned even more interesting when the Rambhapuri seer reportedly inquired as to whether DK Shivakumar had risen in the political elite because of the blessings and support the religious institution had bestowed on him.

HD Thammaiah then made it clear, as a final word, that “100 per cent” DK Shivakumar was going to be Chief Minister and reiterated his support for the Congress leader. The statement has emerged as a prominent talking point in Karnataka’s political discussion, especially among the ruling Congress party, where discussions of leadership and future arrangements for the sharing of power have come up on a regular basis.

While the current state government head, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, remains so, speculation of a possible shift in leadership that involves DK Shivakumar has persisted since the Congress assumed power in Karnataka. But DK Shivakumar is widely considered one of the most important leaders of the Karnataka Congress and made a major contribution to the party’s electoral success.

His supporters have often publicly declared their wish for him to be in place of the chief minister. However, the Congress high command has consistently insisted in different forums that the party is united under Siddaramaiah. Those who are already in the state have seen statements that lawmakers and strong religious personalities make on behalf of local governments trigger political debates to a greater extent, especially in a state like Karnataka, in which community strength and religious institutions play an important social and political role.

Reference to Rambhapuri Peetha as a mutting figure in this discussion has also come to attention in light of the historical relationship between political representatives and influential mutts in Karnataka. Indirectly but importantly, the influence of religious heads in framing political narratives and mobilising people around the state.

At the same time, opposition parties are likely to attack the Congress for the supposed power struggles and ambitions of leadership. But DK Shivakumar's allies interpret the speech as a signal of increasing popular belief in him. So far, neither DK Shivakumar nor senior members of the Congress have officially commented on the MLA's comments.

But the remarks have rekindled some hopes that speculation on Karnataka's future (or near-term) political leadership and the potential for changes within the Congress government in the coming years had been rekindled yet again.
