A fresh political storm seems to be brewing in the opposition camp, with Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK attacking Rahul Gandhi as the Congress leader's popularity is in doubt and the INDIA alliance is threatened by a recent rebellion, and how will the alliance be affected.
In a strongly-worded editorial published in the DMK's official newspaper, the party accused the Congress of talking the language of opposition unity in public and then undermining it behind the scenes. Congress often depends on support from regional parties at Lok Sabha elections but it does not intervene when those same allies find themselves in a tough fight in state elections.
The criticism hits home for the INDIA bloc which was formed as a coalition of opposition parties to fight against the BJP. The alliance is still fighting in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but the differences between it and other parties on seat sharing, leadership, and regional politics are still there.
Without mincing words, the DMK questioned Rahul Gandhi's continuous calls for opposition unity. Unity cannot be sustained through speeches alone; it is something that must be reflected in political actions at all levels, the editorial stated. The party further claimed that many opposition leaders in the past years have been frustrated with Congress' alliance politics.
The editorial also highlighted comments of CPI(M), Samajwadi Party, and RJD leaders who have said that the concerns about Congress' role in the opposition ecosystem are not limited to one party. By citing such examples, the DMK sought to paint a wider picture of discontent among INDIA bloc partners.
Political analysts say one of the biggest challenges facing the alliance is that many of its members are allies at the national level but foes in their own states. Kerala is an example where Congress and the Left are fighting each other fiercely even though they are in the same anti-BJP opposition group. Such tensions also occasionally arise in other states.
The DMK editorial also touched on what it described as a trust deficit within parts of the alliance. Regional parties see their political strength as being underestimated and as a big factor in deciding elections in various states, it added.
The remarks from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership are a reminder that it is not an easy task for the Congress to form a coalition of different regional parties to work together. Although Congress is still the largest opposition party at the national level, regional parties such as DMK, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and other players have become increasingly influential in opposition politics.
It won’t cause a division back and forth in the INDIA bloc at this point in time, but it does highlight existing problems under the surface. Given some key state elections coming up in the near future, opposition parties will have to decide if they can get past regional rivalries to work together.
The DMK’s message for the moment is clear: opposition unity cannot be a one-way street. And as political temperatures rise ahead of future electoral battles, the conflict over trust, leadership, and coalition politics is going to only grow louder.
