Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, on Thursday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Centre's move to appoint fast-track courts for cases where paper leaks have taken place in the wake of the recent announcement of its formation of fast-track courts to deal with paper leaks.
The political discourse came at a time of increasing opposition to alleged irregularities in competitive exams and the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The Prime Minister even announced that fast-track courts would be established to provide swift and severe punishment to those involved in paper leak cases.
Rahul Gandhi said that the government had done harm to the future of students in the name of the government’s comment on the PM. Rahul Gandhi’s comments came as protests against the Centre were on the rise and opposition parties and student groups, as well as students who were protesting against it, were demanding accountability for examination-related irregularities.
PM Modi said in a post on X that nothing was more important than the welfare and future of the country's youth. He said the government had decided to establish fast-track courts to ensure quick legal action and strict punishment for those involved in leaking examination papers.
“Nothing is more important than the welfare and future of our youth! We have decided to set up fast-track courts to ensure swift and stringent punishment for those involved in paper leaks,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that concerned authorities and officials were to take all necessary steps to establish the courts. PM Modi said the decision was one of a series of measures for students’ welfare.
In issuing a stern warning, the Prime Minister said that those who threaten the future of the country's youth would not be spared.
The announcement was made at a time when people are angry about paper leaks and irregular procedures on the main entrance exams. There will be strong protests in Delhi and other parts of the country, with students and opposition parties demanding stronger mechanisms to hold people accountable and to go after those responsible.
The NEET crisis has been a point of political friction in the country for months now as the Opposition has repeatedly targeted the Centre over the security and the potential impact of paper leaks on students. Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have said students who spend years preparing for competitive exams must be provided with a fair and transparent system.
The Prime Minister’s decision to establish fast-track courts will speed up the judicial process in such cases. At present, cases involving examination irregularities can take considerable time to move through the legal system. The proposed mechanism would be aimed at reducing the time taken for those who are convicted.
But the political debate is unlikely to end with the announcement. And even though the government has offered fast-track courts as a way of protecting students and strengthening accountability, the Opposition is pressing for more accountability on the part of those running examination systems.
With protests on the rise and the issue becoming a major political confrontation, the interaction between PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi has further fueled the debate on paper leaks, examination reforms, and the future of millions of students who are expected to appear for competitive exams across India.
