The political situation in Tamil Nadu has intensified after the ruling DMK launched a sharp attack on the Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief Vijay calling him an “opportunist” and describing his newly formed political alliance as an “Opportunistic Cash Box Alliance.”
The comments appeared in the DMK’s Tamil mouthpiece “Murasoli” on 11 September 2026, after the TVK led alliance was formally named as the “Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance”. The criticism is coming as there is growing political tension between the DMK and Vijay's TVK.
DMK Targets Vijay Over His Earlier Remarks
Murasoli claimed that Vijay had joined hands with the parties he had criticized in the course of the preparation of Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, as per the PTI report of DT Next. The DMK publication pointed to Vijay’s earlier description of rival parties as “cash-box alliance parties” and questioned if his current grouping should now be described using the same terminology.
The editorial also mocked Vijay for previously calling some of the parties “and others”, saying he has brought those same political forces together now under the TVK-led alliance.
Congress, VCK, IUML and MDMK Leaders Join Vijay
The controversy centers around the new alliance of TVK, Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK).
A picture from the alliance meeting showed Vijay alongside Congress leader Manickam Tagore, VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan, IUML leader K.M. Kader Mohideen and MDMK general secretary Vaiko.
The alliance was formally named the “Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance,” marking an important development in Tamil Nadu's post-election political landscape.
DMK Revives Vijay’s ‘Cash Box’ Remark
The DMK's latest attack draws heavily on Vijay's own campaign rhetoric. Vijay had attacked the DMK-led alliance in the campaign and questioned whether it was really concerned about people's welfare.
Murasoli has now turned those comments back on the TVK chief, saying that the parties Vijay had criticised earlier are part of the political arrangement that supports his government.
The DMK editorial described the new grouping as an alliance that lacks political conscience and labeled it as “Opportunistic Cash-box Alliance.”
Fresh Political Battle in Tamil Nadu
The exchange shows, however, the growing rivalry between the DMK and TVK. Vijay, who came out from the film industry to lead TVK, has become a very active politician in Tamil Nadu.
The DMK’s latest criticism indicates that the party intends to challenge Vijay not only on policy but also on political alliances supporting his administration.
For TVK, the alliance is an attempt to consolidate support by bringing together different political parties. For the DMK, the same arrangement allows Vijay to accuse Vijay of leaving his earlier political positions.
Both sides are sharpening up their rhetoric and the “cash box alliance” controversy is likely to be another prominent talking point in Tamil Nadu’s ongoing political struggle.
