The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted raids across Karnataka at the properties of PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, his daughter and Chikkodi MP Priyanka Jarkiholi, as well as several associates in connection with a money laundering probe being carried out by the federal agency.
Officials aware of the matter said that the ED is conducting searches at about 18 places in the state. Among those searched are Satish Jarkiholi’s residence in Bengaluru’s plush Dollars Colony area, officials said. The residences and premises of Priyanka Jarkiholi are also being probed as part of the investigation, they added.
The latest action is a major development in the probe, which has been getting political mileage in Karnataka. The ED has not yet revealed details of what they found from the searches, but officials said it was related to allegations of illegal transfer of funds abroad and suspected financial irregularities.
The raids come just a few months after the agency had searched in June at the residence of Y. Manjunath, Additional Commissioner of Excise and brother-in-law of Satish Jarkiholi in Belagavi district. During that operation, the ED had also searched properties belonging to close aides and relatives of the minister.

Sources close to the investigation said that the agency was looking at financial transactions and documents which might reveal whether money had been moved abroad. The probe is reportedly looking into who gave the funds, who received them and whether proceeds of crime were generated or laundered domestically as well as overseas.
Satish Jarkiholi is one of the senior leaders of Karnataka Congress and PWD minister in the state. He has been in politics in Karnataka for many years now and has held several ministerial portfolios in previous governments. His daughter Priyanka Jarkiholi represents the Chikkodi Lok Sabha constituency and is an emerging political leader in the state.

The ED action will be political as well since the ruling Congress and opposition parties will react differently. Opposition leaders might want accountability and transparency on the allegations, but Congress leaders will say the raids are politically motivated until concrete evidence emerges from the investigation.
Neither Satish Jarkiholi nor Priyanka Jarkiholi has given any public statement so far on the searches. ED will look into financial records, electronic devices, property documents and other material seized during the operation before deciding what to do next.
The outcome of the investigation could have political ramifications in Karnataka. The Jarkiholi family is very influential in the state politics, but officials said the searches were part of an ongoing probe and conclusions would be drawn only after evidence was examined.
