Built in 1970, Urvashi Theatre quickly became one of the most popular cinema halls in Bengaluru. It was not limited to Kannada films alone. Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil movies also found great success here, making it a truly multi‑language theatre. For many movie lovers in the Silicon City, Urvashi offered the best cinema experience of its time.

The theatre was also known for introducing advanced technology. It was the first in Bengaluru to bring Dolby audio technology, setting a new standard for sound quality in movie halls. More recently, Urvashi upgraded to Meyer Sound Technology, a system so rare that only two theatres in the entire country have it. This commitment to innovation made Urvashi stand out as a pioneer in cinema presentation.

Over the years, Urvashi became a favorite destination for film stars and fans alike. Many celebrities considered it their preferred theatre, and countless blockbuster films were celebrated here. For audiences, watching a movie at Urvashi was not just entertainment, it was an experience filled with excitement, nostalgia, and pride.

So why is Urvashi Theatre closing? The land on which the theatre was built was leased for about 50 years. That lease expired in 2018, and now the landowners have decided to reclaim the property. As a result, the theatre will be demolished on February 20 next year.

The news has saddened many in Bengaluru. For older generations, Urvashi was part of their childhood and youth, a place where they watched unforgettable films with family and friends. For younger audiences, it was a reminder of how cinema once felt before multiplexes took over.

As the demolition date approaches, Urvashi Theatre will remain in the hearts of Bengaluru residents as a symbol of cinematic history. Though the building will be gone, the memories of its grand screenings, technological innovations, and cultural importance will continue to live on.

Urvashi Theatre’s closure marks the end of an era, but its legacy will remain timeless in the story of Bengaluru’s cinema culture.
