Air travel experiences can be stressful, but for Dr. Virender Sheorain a trip he recently took was one of his worst flights ever. On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Sheorain described the frustrating journey of Etihad Airways flight EY218 from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. When he and his colleagues had purchased Business Class tickets for the night flight on 25 July 2026, he and a few others were surprised at the boarding gate that their premium seats were no longer there.
Dr. Sheorain said the airline made a last-minute aircraft swap and replaced the scheduled plane with an alternative model that was not even a Business Class plane. And in addition to the inconvenience of re-seating, there was no transparency in the re-seating process. Only a small fraction of the premium ticket holders were involuntarily downgraded to Economy and the rest of the Business Class passengers were able to retain their upgrade or premium seats without any rationale to the ground crew.
A Painful Journey and Not Getting Compensation. For Dr. Sheorain, who lives in Gurgaon, the sudden downgrade was much more than an inconvenience. He had been selected and paid for a Business Class seat because he had a medical condition that would require a higher level of physical comfort during long travel hours. He was forced to fly home in a very uncomfortable overnight flight in tiny economy quarters and arrived in New Delhi at 3:00 a.m. in physical distress.
My worst airline experience ever—and that too after paying for a Business Class ticket.

On @Etihad flight #EY218 from Abu Dhabi to New Delhi on 25 July 2026, passengers with confirmed Business Class tickets were informed only at the boarding gate that the aircraft had been…
The situation deteriorated when he spoke to the ground staff. The affected passengers were offered a USD 200 travel voucher and a partial fare refund for 50% to 70% of the downgraded sector, but that brief sense of accountability was abruptly turned away. Dr. Sheorain said airline representatives later said the voucher offer to passengers was made by mistake and refused to honor it. Not to mention the lack of any apology or clear communication made passengers feel incredibly alienated as well.
Why do involuntary downgrades happen? How do you deal with it and what are your rights? Aviation experts like AirAdvisor CEO Anton Radchenko have said involuntary cabin downgrades in airplanes happen when operational disruption is sudden, overbooking is occurring, or last-minute equipment changes to an air carrier are made for the airline to switch to a smaller premium configuration of aircraft. Airlines often rely on the fact that everyday travelers are unaware of their legal rights to avoid paying prompt compensation.
If you’ve ever been downgraded at the boarding gate, experts recommend the right thing, and not waiting to get back home with a trip:
- Request a written explanation from the airline detailing why the downgrade occurred.
- Preserve both your original boarding pass and the newly assigned one.
- Take photographs of your assigned economy seat.
- Retain all digital communications, emails, and text messages with airline agents.
- Push for a refund or compensation signature before leaving the airport hub.
In the framework of regulatory bodies such as Etihad’s own website for flights from India, passengers subjected to involuntary downgrades on international legs are generally entitled to structured refunds calculated by distance (ranging from 30% to 75% of the total ticket cost including taxes). If airlines do not respond satisfactorily, passengers can escalate through grievance mechanisms such as India’s AirSewa portal under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
