The federal bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Harmanveer Singh, an Indian, in California on charges of international drug trafficking in a conspiracy against the Ravinder Dhanda gang and alleged worldwide drug trafficking networks in the U.S.
Harmanveer Singh was taken into custody by California Highway Patrol in Stockton, California. The FBI confirmed that Singh was wanted on a federal arrest warrant issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
He is being held on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, conspiracy to export controlled substances and possession of controlled substances with the intention to distribute.
Singh was associated with the Ravinder Dhanda gang, a Canadian organized crime network that investigators say operated large-scale drug trafficking operations across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Law enforcement investigators believe such an organization has been involved in the movement and distribution of illegal narcotics through a sophisticated cross-border network.
The arrest comes after the FBI had publicly identified Harmanveer Singh as a wanted man earlier this month. The FBI had made public appeals to the public for information about his whereabouts before finding and arresting him in California.
"We are all about Operation Hard Ball, that’s an effort at coordination among the global law enforcement community to bring to a close organized criminal networks related to drug trafficking and other serious crimes,” he said.
“It’s the operation that involves the United States and Canada and other partners working in parallel with each other to find, track and bring down the individuals connected to those criminal organizations.”
Court documents contend Harmanveer Singh used aliases such as Hari Gautam and Harman Sandhu when he was in prison. The government says he was involved in transporting and passing illegal drugs across international borders. However, authorities have little to no evidence against him and the case is in the U.S. judicial system.

The FBI has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling transnational criminal organizations that threaten public safety through narcotics trafficking, money laundering, and other organized criminal activities. Such cooperation is needed to unearth networks that are spread across countries, the officials said.
Harmanveer Singh is expected to appear in California today and those legal proceedings will dictate what happens next. If convicted of the charges against him, he could serve lengthy prison terms under U.S. federal law.
The arrest highlights growing cooperation among international law enforcement agencies to combat organized crime that extends beyond national borders. There are also investigations into the Dhanda gang ongoing and more arrests or legal action could follow, the police have also said.
Harmanveer Singh’s accusations are serious but he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, they say.
And the FBI will be working with partner agencies to continue to track and dismantle drug networks around the world, the FBI has said.
