In an anti-corruption operation, Karnataka Lokayukta Police arrested a District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) in Gadag and her official car driver in connection with a bribery case involving the release of wages for an outsourced employee. This is the Lokayukta's continued efforts to fight corruption in government offices and ensure accountability in public administration.
The case came to light when an outsourced worker approached the Lokayukta to allege that a bribe had been demanded to get the pending wages released. Based on the complaint, Lokayukta police organized a trap operation to verify the accusations and arrest those involved.
Driver Arrested While Accepting ₹15,000
During the trap, the officer’s car driver, Moula Hussain, was caught red-handed while accepting ₹15,000, which the police believe is the first instalment of the total bribe amount allegedly demanded by the complainant.
Lokayukta officials immediately detained the driver after the money was exchanged. Standard trap procedures, including the recovery of the marked currency notes and documentation of evidence, were carried out in the presence of witnesses as part of the investigation.
It was believed that the money was sought in exchange for processing and releasing the outsourced employee's wages which were still pending, the report said.
Complaint Triggered the Trap
According to preliminary information, the outsourced employee claimed that despite being entitled to receive wages for work already performed, payment was allegedly delayed. The complainant also claimed that a demand for illegal gratification was made to clear the pending dues.
Instead of paying the alleged bribe, the employee approached the Karnataka Lokayukta and lodged a formal complaint. After verifying the initial information, the anti-corruption agency planned the trap operation, which resulted in the driver's arrest.
Further investigations will determine the extent of involvement of other individuals, including the district child protection officer.
Investigation Underway
After the successful trap, Lokayukta police registered a case and started further investigations. Officers will look at documents, financial records, electronic communication, and statements from witnesses to determine the sequence of events and identify the roles of all those allegedly involved.
Searches may also be conducted if required under the provisions of the investigation.
The police have not made any further arrests so far, but they have not disclosed whether more arrests will be made, as the inquiry is still in its early stages.
