Gas Shortage Forces Hotels and Restaurants in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai to Shut Down

Hotels and restaurants across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai are grappling with a severe shortage of commercial LPG cylinders that have left more than 10,000 outlets short of gas. With kitchens running on reduced fuel, many places are shrinking menus, cutting hours, even shutting their doors. This shortage is affecting more than just businesses but also altering the dining experience of thousands of patrons.

Chennai: Hotels on the Edge

In Chennai, the situation is worse. The Chennai Hotels Association has warned that more than 10,000 hotels and restaurants rely on commercial LPG cylinders. The small tea stores, clubs, and restaurants have already reduced their scale. Hoteliers claim that they are left with only 2–3 days of stock left, and that they will close soon if supply does not resume.

Bengaluru: Shutdowns Looming

Bengaluru is also bracing itself for the disruptions. Hotel and restaurant operations could be substantially affected from March 10, the Bangalore Hotels Association said. And several companies are already considering temporary closures as gas supply has ceased.

Mumbai: New Closures Already Taking Place

Mumbai has also been hard-hit, with reports claiming that 20% of all hotels and restaurants have already closed down. Many restaurants have suspended services until cylinders are available again, with customers offered fewer options.

Causes of the Shortage

There are various reasons for the shortage:

  • Disruption of global supply chains due to an ongoing conflict in West Asia
  • Transport delays and bottlenecks at big oil company bottling plants
  • Rise of prices – household LPG pricing surged by ₹60 and commercial cylinders by ₹115

How It Affects Hotels and Customers

The crisis is transforming the hospitality industry:

  • Hotels are slashing menus and offering only what’s necessary.
  • Hours of operation have been drastically cut, with some businesses closing early.
  • Staff earnings are falling as working hours decrease.
  • Customers now have fewer food options and irregular hotel timings are common.

The LPG shortage has hit Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai hardest, with 20% of hotels already closed in Mumbai and Chennai restaurants reporting closures in days. Unless quick adjustments to supply are made, large closures across these cities are inevitable. This crisis is not only compromising the hospitality industry it is also disrupting millions of people’s daily dining culture.
